My Close Encounter With Dolphins in Jamaica

I swear I have the best life sometimes!  I’ve never seen a dolphin in real life, up close and personal.  This day was supposed to be a nice casual half-day boat ride with my BFF Shelley, from St Elizabeth, Jamaica.  He owns a boat and has taken us to Pelican Bar many times but this day we had no plans except to ride the coastline, stop half way at Fort Charles beach for some drinks and then continue on.

Shelley, his brother and another friend of theirs picked me up in the boat pretty much at my front doorstep, which was the backyard beach of where I was staying.  I was armed and ready with my cameras and a beach bag containing my towel, a quart of Appleton rum and four plastic cups.

I went out my back door, walked down the beach, jumped in the boat and we were off!  Shelley was on the motor and his brother was up front navigating.  With no real destination in mind we took off into the wild blue yonder, unaware that some pretty awesome underwater friends were going to make our entire day!

After around thirty minutes we reached Fort Charles beach and that would be our halfway stopping point to have a drink, a swim and some chill time.  While the boys secured the boat I set up our rum picnic in the sand on this deserted beach.  All the while I just thought this was the highlight of the day….being out in the open air sharing a great day and some drinks with my favorite people.

After an hour or so on the beach we decided to head back to the boat and make Pelican Bar our next destination.  THIS is when the magic happened!  Keep in mind I’ve never, ever seen a dolphin in real life so this was quite the experience for me, and by the sounds of Kenny in the video he’d never seen any dolphins this close either.  What an awesome experience this was for all of us!

And there you have it…..reason #1,387,248 that I’d rather be in Jamaica!

Marjo – I totally know what you mean. People pay so much money to see dolphins and I got this for free! No, I didn’t swim with them but it was so much nicer to see them play in their natural habitat!
