Someone’s Always Playing Games in Jamaica

goatNecessity is always the mother of invention and nowhere is this more apparent than in Jamaica.  Like for example, the goats that wander on the roads with homemade wooden frames around their necks to prevent them from escaping their yards or entering other people’s yards (I borrowed the photo on the left from Google because I’ve never actually taken a pic any of the times I see them wandering).

This blog post is about something equally as entertaining the goats…..it’s about the games people play, and how simple things are in Jamaica.  It’s quite charming and makes me wish people in general would just get back to basics and PLAY.

Last month I went on another motorbike tour of the south coast and made a random stop at a little bar for a refreshment.  When I walked into the bar this is what I saw on the counter top and I HAD to snap a picture of it.  I thought it was brilliant.  They had a checker board but obviously no checkers so they just improvised.

Ironically a few days later I was at another bar right after doing a boat tour and the owner and his friends were hanging out playing……you guessed it…..checkers!  On this checker board lol. At least I think that’s what they were playing, but I can’t be sure because I have no idea what the word “draft” means on the squares.

Can it get any simpler than a homemade checker board with bottle caps?  There are so many things I see around Jamaica that make me wonder WHY us foreigners need so much fancy gear just to play a game!  Our kids would never choose this over sitting in front of a television with a video game controller in their hands.

Anyway this is just a short little post because I had these two photos to share and entertain you.

What are some of the simple pleasures you’ve seen in Jamaica that make you love it there so much?
