I know how us foreigners love our all-day breakfast joints such as Denny’s and IHOP back home. Well I found it in Jamaica! All-day breakfast with a little touch of yaad.
Last week I went for another motorbike tour with my friend Shelley and his bike posse. As usual we rode from Hilltop all the way over to Treasure Beach which was our halfway stop for lunch. We had no agenda for food but clouds were rolling in so we chose the first place we saw which happened to be a little place called Smurfs Cafe & Sports Bar.
Around the back of the place they have a great covered seating area with plenty of room for our group of 8 people.
At first I thought I’d be in for just another Jamaican meal but when I walked inside the place to check out the menu I was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty much breakfast items ONLY….at 3:00 in the afternoon! Like omlettes and hash browns and pancakes! I don’t know about you all but for me it was a major treat because I love my Western breakfast food!
I ordered up my favorite veggie and cheese omlette, the main veg being Calaloo with some tomato in there too, accompanied by some saltfish fritters. Not long after ordering the biggest, fattest omlette arrived at my table along with my fritters. This is a pretty sweet looking breakfast, no?
Trust me I was so full I needed a nap after eating all of it. Everything was absolutely delicious and to top off the entire meal, to our surprise Miss Dawn, the lady who runs the place surprised us all with a complimentary freshly blended banana shake. It was so thick and sweet it tasted like ice cream!
Speaking of Miss Dawn, she’s a busy woman down here. Not only does she provide all-day breakfast but in the time that we sat here (a couple hours) she never stopped whipping up baked delights. She makes all kinds of cakes including chocolate and some coconut concoction that smelled heavenly in the pan. But the best part about her is that she’s hilarious! She never stopped telling jokes and throwing around her wit while we sat with her.
As I sit here in Salem on the north coast my mouth is watering for this omlette again. I could use breakfast right now so I think I’ll have to pay her another visit when I head back down south tomorrow!
