The Name Says It All
It’s called “Simply The Best” for a reason. I’m sure you’re probably tired of hearing about my fried chicken escapades all around Jamaica but this is THE one. I will stop bothering you with fried chicken posts after this one. My apologies go out to Red October and High Hopes restaurants who held it down until I discovered this place.Â
I recently returned from 3 weeks in Jamaica and went for my routine physical check up shortly after getting home. I’m embarrassed to say that for the first time in my life my cholesterol tested high and the first thing that came to mind was the 10+ times I ate fried chicken in my 3 week trip. (Ooooops!!)
I knew about this place almost two years ago because my neighbor Shane came home late one night with a friend and they knocked on my door until I woke up, just to drag my butt out onto the veranda and chat. They were both eating chicken and chips so in an effort to appease my mood from waking me up, they offered me some of their food. I only ate some chips in the dark and never tried the chicken but they were the best damn chips I ever ate….didn’t even need salt!
It wasn’t until a whole year later that I asked Shane how I can find this place on my own. He just told me to go up by Shades night club in Ocho Rios and the place was right out front on the same road. Perfect positioning for those who want food after the freak show inside Shades! From the day I drove up to Simply The Best, that was it. I’ve never really wanted fried chicken from anywhere else and I go out of my way to get it from here. And because it’s outside a nightclub it’s pretty much open ANY time you’re craving it!
Apologies for the unclear photo of the price list – I used my Blackberry to snap it.  The prices are cheap in relation to the amount of food you get. I always buy the “medium food” in a midsize container and it’s waaaay more chicken and chips than I can eat in one sitting so essentially I’m getting two meals for the price of one. Two giant pieces of breast and billions of fries. I admit I’ve never tried any of the other food on the menu….simply because I can’t get past the fried chicken.
On my last Jamaica jaunt I had a couple Canadian friends with me and we quickly adopted Simply The Best as our old faithful when we were hungry. It was always a unanimous group decision to go get some “Shades Chicken” every time we were hungry. And big up to this restaurant for winning my “best presentation” award with all their container sizes hanging above the order window with prices written on every size!
