Working In Jamaica

Nothing is Ever as it Seems

Earlier this year I relocated to Montego Bay to fulfill a work contract that I scored and was so excited to get started on! Who really gets paid to go to Jamaica and tour luxury villas? THAT still remains a good question because it sure wasn’t me! It just wouldn’t be “Jamaica My Way” without a severe mishap turned learning experience turned great success in the end.

In the post highlighted above I included images of where I was supposed to be living but from day one that was not the case. When I arrived I was promptly redirected to Seaview Chateau as an interim solution to a plumbing problem at the original place (or so I was told). Regardless, I loved Seaview Chateau and did a wonderful review for them. They were gracious hosts and all was well until my week there was over and again, I had nowhere on the agenda to go. The company I was working for was fully responsible for my accommodations but seemed to be scrambling to figure themselves out. HOWEVER…..I was thoroughly enjoying my new job! I was in Jamaica and I knew things would work themselves out. How could I not love touring places like in the following photos?

montego bay villa

By the second week it was clear to me that there was no alternate living arrangements because 3 days of my “weekend” were spent driving around looking at villas my employer wanted to acquire for themselves. After 3 long and stressful days (stressful because me having a place to live completely rested on whether we found a villa they liked), they settled on a cute villa that had a separate apartment which they assured would be mine once all the papers were signed. That never happened either, of course right after I put the photo of it on Facebook announcing my new little place.

Regardless, they took the villa and I had a bedroom in it for the time being…..UNTIL they told me they have guests booked for this villa arriving in the next few days. That put me out yet again and I got to sleep in the helpers quarters. Some of you may remember a post I did wrote entitled “The Help”, which has since been deleted from my blog (it is now re-posted).  I wrote that post because by living in helpers quarters for a week along with the actual villa staff I was enlightened about their jobs and it was a different perspective.  Aside from the fact that this was NOT in my contract at all, and I had no internet access which WAS a requirement in my contract (otherwise how could I do my job?), I didn’t suffer. I was just banished to a small room and I think my employer forgot about everything they agreed to before I quit a job in Canada to go to Jamaica to work for them. But I was still viewing amazing properties such as the one pictured below….awesome.

blue heaven

My saving grace was going to arrive in Jamaica shortly which made things a whole lot more awesome. My friend, a travel agent was coming in and she would be whisking me away to Sandals resorts with her. She was going there on business and I got to be a tag along. While her and I were basking in the marvelousness of Sandals in Ocho Rios I was still scheduled to be working, I had appointments booked to view villas on that end of the island. So our first morning waking up in Sandals her and I had our morning coffee and set up our work stations like so:

balcony at sandals ocho rios

It was at that very spot on that balcony that I received the news that my employment had been terminated, after 3 weeks of working, due to the blog post “The Help”. It all happened by email and before they actually terminated me they asked what my intentions were with that blog post and I simply answered, “The same as with all my blog posts….to write about unique things I do in Jamaica”.  In my mind, who else that travels to Jamaica gets to hang out with the villa staff and learn about what they do?  It was prime blogging material and so totally up my alley as everyone who reads this blog would know.  So after asking what my intentions were they asked me to delete the post because it was destroying their business << Now THAT one I couldn’t figure out at all.  How was my blog post that mentioned no business names and no addresses in it, destroying their business?  It was a generic blog post about villa staff.  Period.  But I deleted it as they asked and their decision was to terminate me anyway.  So I re-posted it lol.

I don’t stress about much in Jamaica and I can fly home anytime I like for $200 so they didn’t ruin my life but I, along with my travel partner sitting at that table with me were dumbfounded. I think mostly I was just taken aback by the stupidness of the situation. But here I was sitting at Sandals with amazing coffee in front of me thinking, “Woohoo! Now I can completely enjoy the Sandals experience without having to leave the property and go to work!” I can say I was a little sad that I thought I might be leaving Jamaica 3 weeks into the job when it was supposed to be around 8 weeks long but I wasn’t about to stress it just yet. It just made me sad that I would not be viewing outdoor showers such as this one anymore….I loved touring villas!

I returned to the villa I was “living” in and the guests had gone so I moved back into a room there and told my employers they HAD to give me a reasonable amount of time to find a place to go, which they agreed to. But in a whirlwind faster than I could blink the villa magically changed hands and they no longer were responsible for it. Some investors stepped in and took over the lease, moved in and allowed me to stay. The bonus was that I had a free place to live still….the un-bonus was that I lived in a house full of people I didn’t know but so it goes in Jamaica! You make fast friends there and living styles are different so people just live with people. It wasn’t the best situation but I was the one choosing to stay rather than fly home.

Karma Turned Some Things Around

I’m not going to lie, I was basically miserable living in that house for 5 weeks with the guys who also lived there. I was the only female, the only foreigner and it got tired really fast. But I DID make some amazing connections somehow, that I would not have made had I not gone to Jamaica for this job. I had plenty of visitors from my blog readers and personal friends. I met some amazing people and made great connections, such as the American photographer who put me in contact with his publishing company, who in turn gave me 4 segments to write in the tourist board magazine. I had some amazing offers to stay at villas and write reviews, I assisted some of my readers in planning their vacations and in turn, made some pretty decent commissions. And I won at the casino!!

I would have gone back to Canada with my tail between my legs MUCH sooner had there not been a major travel group link-up planned for the end of May which I was planning to attend. Blog post on that will come down the road. I guess the biggest tragedy of the entire situation was that my employer didn’t pay me what they owed me so I was basically just hanging out in Jamaica, useless for 7 weeks. I tried several times to appeal to their human side and tell them I’m not asking for a dime more than they owe me but they just didn’t want to pay up so I let it go. I believe in karma and I made more money off the connections I found than I would have ever made from the employer. So…..I’m not crying.

The one thing I wish is that I didn’t have a conscience because I’d really love to splash them all over the place as a company not to do business with but I just can’t do it. As I said I believe in karma and I already got my good karma in return. I have yet to see their business launch so I’m assuming their karma is taking care of itself.

In total, I was in Jamaica for 7 weeks on that go-round and it left a lot to be desired. But I was still there and all the subsequent timing of everything else has worked out just nicely. OH and remember in the post I did right before I left, I said I was hoping to start doing something with a purpose rather than just travel for travel’s sake? The purpose has presented itself and it will fulfill itself shortly. So all things work together for the greater good. Amen.

I’m so glad I got up out of bed and saw this beauty sitting here…. I’m equally bummed that I missed The Help. Would maybe pay a million dollars to see it… for real… you have my e-mail… no one would have to know. Think about it. Love, your fan in Florida

    1. I love that you got out of bed for this LOL! Check your inbox.

  2. oh my goodness! i’d’ve clicked one of those moodthingies but the only one that doesn’t apply is “bored”… funny how things that go completely sidewards turn out to be the best things though… my trip did too and i wouldn’t go baack and change anything that happened, not for all the – was going to say tea in china but not for all the rum in Jamaica would make more sense here… dwl! anyways, yup, karma… it absolutely will fulfill itself, and all things do work for the greater good… knocking on wood! (is there a Jamaican equivalent to that saying?)

  3. Sorry those people took advantage of your good nature, Kristy. I would have been completely pissed off if they had put me through that kind of stress of not knowing if I would even have a roof over my head! (I can hear myself shouting now… LOL) And then to not pay you. What users. I, too, believe in karma and it sounds like they are already getting theirs. BTW, I remember “The Help” post and I enjoyed it. It was fun to learn what villa workers do since I never stay in those “uppity” accommodations either! If these owners think those of us who travel the real Jamaica are naive, they need to get a grip. It’s the nice Jamaican workers we meet that keeps us coming back… not (usually) the guy that owns the place! If this is the way they treat people, they likely will not have a staff much longer either! Wish your conscience would fail you now & then so we could know who these idiots are and make sure our readers NEVER visit their properties. But word always gets around on its own. Glad things are looking up for you! Keep it jiggy 🙂

    1. Thanks Theresa. I was angry for a little while, not so much about losing the job but about not getting paid what they owed. It’s just shitty business and in my position, I could do a LOT of damage but I choose not to because that would make me look just as bad. My mama always taught me to take the high road. And here I am LOL.

You actually made an EXCELLENT point, that it’s not the villa rental sites that keep people coming back to Jamaica….it’s the JAMAICANS that keep us coming back.

Excellent post. So sorry I missed “The Help”. “Help” me find it, please 🙂

  5. oh my goodness! i’d’ve clicked one of those moodthingies, but the only one that doesn’t apply is “bored”… funny how things that go completely sidewards turn out to be the best things, though… my trip did too and i wouldn’t change it for anything… but yeah, what an absolutely crummy way for them to take advantage of you… yup, karma… all things absolutely do work for the greater good, and the purpose will fulfill itself (knocking on wood! is there a Jamaican equivalent for that saying?)

  6. Sorry that happend to you I think everyone that goes to Jamaica at some point will get a burn or two/taken advantage of and I know that we have same people that burn us here so its not just in Jamaica. I think your like me in a sense that when someone like them see us they know we are good people and then they will take us for a ride. I had a terrible experience and was homeless for about 5 hours but so stressed that I was throwing up cause I was visualizing myself sleeping in the woods lol. I was a room mate to a Jamaican girl there who was also suppose to be my friend whom I found out later was taking anything and everything she could including $3000 Jamaican dollars more in rent then I was actually suppose to pay her. When I told her I didnt want to party as much and I had to watch my money cause I was there for 4 months she changed and was bad mouthing me behind my back. I came to find out from a Calgarian whom called me and told me I shoudl leave. I was hurt and angry so I just packed up and walked out didnt tell her why I just left in tears. I then realized I was now homeless with my bags at a local shop drinking. In that same 5 hours I hated Jamaica and everything about it cause I was so upset and taken advantage of by a girl not a guy if you can imagine. Then out of no where a RASTA appeared we smoked and he told me not to leave with a bad taste in my mouth about Jamaica, he and his family cooked for me and made me feel much better. I then found a family that I lived with for the rest of my stay (3 months). Although I had to share a bed with 3 kids who took turns pissing up the bed, the washroom and bathing area were outside and we had baby mice/rats running around on the floor I WAS NEVER SO HAPPY. I went from staying in a nice house that had washroom inside, cable tv, a kitchen and my own room with my own entrance to a 2 bedroom home. I never felt so much love and welcome from the family that took me in. Your are right things do work themselves out even in Jamaica. Although I know that money cannot buy happiness actually LIVING THE EXPERIENCE made me more greatful and appreciate everything I have. As for the liar/theif/trifflen girl I was first originally staying with she got her Karma and then some. It took two years but as I write this she is now homeless and looking for a dollar. I feel sorry for her but same time I am glad she is in it and hope things work out for her but maybe not so soon. This is a long response guess I went off on a tagent.

    1. First I want to respond to Laura >>> WOW what an experience you had!!!! But I’m SO glad it turned out to be pleasant in the end and that you gave Jamaica another chance. You’re right we all get burned at some point or another and it takes a brave person to admit it because we don’t like to feel stupid. I’m glad I posted this because it gave me a chance to hear your story too.

Irene >> I LOVED that office too!! And I think your comment has given me the motivation to un-hide “The Help”. What’s the point in keeping it hidden now? I didn’t get the job back so it’s like censoring myself for no reason.

Tanya >> Yes karma is a good thing and bigger things are coming this way so I can’t regret it. If I hadn’t gone to Jamaica for that job I wouldn’t have landed upon some of the other things I did. It’s all good! And ask a Jamaican if there’s an equivalent expression….I’m interested.

To all of you, I’m unblocking The Help post so you can see how it was written and how this whole thing was a huge misunderstanding taken the wrong way.

  7. O where to begin??? Firstly, I think you need to re-post “The Help”, since the staff has remained with the new company . . . I not only got you permission but full blessing from the new owners to post it. The staff IS what makes the Villa Experience amazing in Jamaica. I will add that the STAFF at the AI resorts in Jamaica is what makes those resorts amazing. And since the STAFF are Jamaican People, I will say the Jamaican People are what make visiting Jamaica amazing. Secondly, LOVE LOVE LOVE the balcony office photo – LOL and wish that could be my office EVERYDAY! My last thing I want to say is I LOST $20 at that casino! What on earth did you play?

  8. Awww man I am so sorry to hear about this 🙁 But things did turn around for the better and better opportunities came out of it. You always seem to land on your feet and in a better place after it. *sidebar* I need to re-read “The Help” lol

A nice post. I really wish you could shed light on WHO those swindlers were though. But I understand why you can’t.

    1. @Thompson – Yea, it’s not that I can’t but I just won’t. I would like to be the bigger person. 🙂

  10. Wow, I am at a loss for words, and that is hard to do. I am so offended by those jerk-offs that treated you that way. They just didn’t have any money to pay you; I mean damn, they couldn’t even find a stable place for you to stay. So, they made up this stupid crap about “The Help” post to try to slither their way out of paying you. Don’t take it personal. They are losers…..for REAL!

I’m really sorry you didn’t have the best experience in MoBay. I was worried about that, but I’m glad you can find “peace” in other parts of the island.

You know….you are one of the strongest people I have ever known. Your talent for writing is beyond that of others. I am truely routing for you to live your dream to the fullest. You sure are working hard enough for it. 🙂

Don’t worry about those people (whoever they are – they ARE lucky you don’t splash their name all over the internet). But I agree that it pays to be the bigger person. Good for you Kristi.

    1. Yea what sucks is that I already had a not so great impression of Mobay in general and this didn’t help at all. BUT I also realize these people have nothing to do with the town itself and my experiences there were what I made them.

And thank you so much for your compliments Jamie, it truly means a lot to me.

  11. very beautiful houses and stunning views! I like the pool

  12. Kristi: Love your posts. I always read them when I get a chance. Actually, I don’t know if I am mistaken but I just read that post re the Help. I cannot see how you were damaging his business. Was he afraid that the truth would come out to show how some people treat their help in the islands? Things have not changed much with a lot of people. Unfortunately, life in the islands makes some people accept a lot of things that are humiilating to them in order to survive and people should be ashamed of themselves when they do not put themselves in other people’s situation and exploit them. I have worked in the legal profession and I know for a fact that if you did not mention names that you could not be sued. For a matter of fact if you were in Canada, you could have sued him for not paying you. It is obvious that the person involved is super-sensitive and felt that you were exposing him. You weren’t because you did not identify the villa or its location in any way. What you probably did is expose how staff is exploited in this day and age and treated just like they did in the old days.

I don’t know if you will post this, but if you don’t that is O.K. I just wanted you to know that you did not do anything that was illegal. On the other hand it was good for people to see what is going on behind the luxary that they enjoy and they must learn to treat the people who serve them with more respect.

I am glad that things turned out O.K. in the end except for having to be in cramped quarters.

    1. Angela thank you so much for posting that. It puts my mind at ease that I did nothing wrong. I actually thought about pursuing them legally but for the amount of money they owe it isn’t worth it. I would have just done it for the principle of it all. I can say that these staff members were not treated unfairly at all during the time I was there. I just wanted to emphasize that it IS the staff that makes or breaks a villa vacation and they deserve every penny they earn AND MORE. Having been on the other side of it, I was enlightened.

When I’m able to run my own place with my own staff they will 100% be treated as team members, not employees.

  13. Hi Kristie: What a thrill! So happy you ventured into a new non tourist zone, under the supervision of good natives. I am a former Flower Hill resident who started a non profit to Promote Education as a Path to Progress. It was inspired by the conditions of Flower Hill, after recognizing that after being gone for approximately 30 years, there was “barely” any improvements. Please email me, I would love to talk with you. So delighted you went to church in Flower Hill, how special!

    1. Eveth are you the same person who left a comment on my Youtube video of Flower Hill? If so, I’ve sent you a message. 🙂

  14. After going through everything in my mind, maybe the pictures did it. Afterall, it showed the condition of their bedrooms plus you did describe that the other one that had no windows and he knew that those were not good conditions. Anyway, you are back on track now. Keep up the good work. Rewards will follow.

  15. Hi Kristi, I like this post. the villa looks awesome. beautiful views. Is there anyway you can tell us what villa this is?

  16. Hey Shon,

    The villas are as follows:

#1 – Silent Waters (no one can afford this place LOL! $17,000 usd per week)
    #2 – Blue Heaven
    #3 – Sandals Grande Riviera
    #4 – Almond Hill (I think)

  17. Jamaican can be a nice place. It has many unique attractions that one might not find back home. However, in order to prevent surprises, do some research about the country before you go. Talk to others who’ve traveled to Jamaica. Search it online.
Also, research it’s laws. Although some of their laws might be similar to the US laws, there are different penalties for breaking them. Some might be harsher in Jamaica as well as some might be treated with leniency.
Make sure you travel in groups and always be aware of your surroundings and know where you’re going at all times. And, this might be because of personal experiences; I’d advise you to stay clear of the JUTC buses that is primarily the city bus service they have. The buses run crappy and crew and customer service representatives can be really obnoxious.

    1. Thanks for the comment Donny. That’s what this blog is all about – trying to teach my readers a thing or two about fun AND safety on the island.
People should always be aware but at the same time, being OVER-cautious or listening too much to negative things might take away some of the great experiences you can have if you bust loose a little. It’s all part of the adventures!!!

    Hey there!
After reading this post you have revived my inspiration. I have traveled to Jamaica a handful of times and met some really amazing people. Those people were the ones that changed my vacation from a week or two on a resort on a beautiful island to a life experience I will never forget! Ever since my first trip there I have made steps in my education to try to get closer to a life and career in the country I love, Jamaica! After reading your post, it just goes to show that with some determination things will work out for you. I’m sorry that the original company didn’t work out and gave you the run around but as you said you got your good Karma from it and that’s great! I hope i too one day can live and work in Jamaica! Hopefully this July when I go I’ll land something equally as awesome as the things you write about! 🙂

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting Kaitlyn! I wish you the best with your future plans! 🙂
