Jump On A Motorcycle Taxi In Jamaica

Bike Taxis In Negril

I once wrote a post about how I’ve tried every method of transportation in Jamaica but I lied. I’ve known about bike taxis for years but just never took the opportunity to try one. Why? I have no excuse because I’ve stayed up in the residential hills of Negril plenty of times to know these things run all over the place and they can get you to areas that cars often can’t or won’t go. The one I took (a few times) went up and down West End road where cars easily go but I’ve seen these bikes run up terrible roads in the hills with ease.

One night a couple weeks ago I was out pretty late in Negril on a fried chicken craving. I negotiated my way into a free JUTA van ride down to the food shop because the driver couldn’t stand to see a solo female walking alone in the night. As I sat eating on the roadside I noticed this exact spot was where a few bike taxis pulled in and parked. It took me less than half a second to decide that’s exactly how I was getting back up to where I came from.

For $100 jmd ($300 late at night) you can get from in the town center of Negril all the way up West End road along the cliffs and past Ricks Cafe. That’s like a DOLLAR to ride in the open air with your arms around a cute stranger. You just can’t find value like that anywhere these days! So I rode all the way from the bottom of West End road with Marlon and had some laughs and conversation while we drove. When we reached my destination I asked him for his number because I decided I’m never taking a regular ride anywhere ever again in Negril! The next day I called him twice for a ride to absolutely nowhere – I just wanted to ride on the bike. I returned to the fried chicken place just as an excuse to take another ride.

Last year I tried jumping on the back of a random crotch rocket just for thrills and it was a blast but that wasn’t nearly as relaxed as a ride on the back of a bike taxi where you can actually sit upright and enjoy the ride knowing your driver won’t be stunting and flinging you off the back!

LOOOL Heather! I don’t know why I’m laughing because it sounds dangerous, but somehow I know the story is going to be entertaining. Glad you’re still alive and I can’t wait to hear all about it! Be safe!
