Villas Sur Mer – Negril, Jamaica

My Official Review

“Sur Mer” is French and means “on the sea”.  I had to Google that but it all makes sense now.  This week I had the awesome experience of staying at this gorgeous property and I’m not lying when I say I could have stayed there forever!  I have posted a video tour below because there were simply too many photos to show how amazing this place is.

Villas Sur Mer is located in the west end of Negril, almost directly across the road from Rick’s Cafe.  The first thing that caught my attention  about this property is that you would never know it’s there from the road.  I never imagined there could be such a large property behind the gates from the main road.  This is, without a doubt, one of the prettiest properties I’ve ever toured and stayed at.  The long pathway that winds through the separate villa suites is lined with palm leaves and lush greenery which keeps every unit private and gives you a rainforest feel.

I stayed in villa #5 on the property which is a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom suite with living and dining room, full kitchen and an amazing section inside the living area that’s open to the outdoors. I was praying for rain while I was inside just to see how it would look to have rain falling in my living room. Unfortunately the only time it happened to rain I was away from the villa. But I still got to enjoy bright natural light, the breeze and the sound of singing birds the entire time I was inside.

The feel inside each of these villas is rustic but very plush and classy. There are lots of wooden louver windows that let the breezes flow freely through all the living space. I found it very relaxing to wake up to white sheer drapes billowing in the wind and it made me never want to get out of bed.  I could have laid there all day enjoying it.  The decor throughout each suite is white with splashes of colorful cushions and throw pillows creating a calm and subdued feeling.

One of the most unique features of the suites are the bathrooms, as you will see in the video below.  Most of them are done in raw concrete that’s been glazed over to make it smooth. I would have never thought plain gray concrete could be a luxury feature until I saw it here.  I would like to know who designed and decorated this property and hire them to make me one!  Plenty of white linens are provided in each bathroom along with shampoo, soaps and hairdryers – good to know if you’re packing for vacation.  It seems Villas Sur Mer has thought of everything because there was even an umbrella in each suite.  I wish I would have known that before I packed and brought my own from Montego Bay.

Another fabulous feature of all the suites are the fully functioning kitchens. Of the units I viewed, each has a mini-fridge, coffee maker, gas cooktop, toaster and everything you need to self-cater. They also have room service and bar service, there are menus in each room of what’s available to order.  I scanned the menu and the prices seemed to be in the reasonable range for tourist prices, comparable what you would pay for better than average dining back home.

You Don’t Need the Beach to Get to the Ocean Here!

A couple of undeniably coolest features of Villas Sur Mer are its water features.  At the very back of the property there are two pools; one is  designed to look like a lagoon surrounded with large rocks and plants.  It feels like a spa getaway retreat area.  Beside the large pool is a smaller sitting pool.  Both pools are surrounded by a huge deck with plenty of comfy lounge chairs and a bar area.

The other water feature that only guests of this property can enjoy is a cave that leads straight to the sea.  At the front of the property there are stairs leading down into what looks like a dungeon.  You walk through a short dark cave that passes underneath West End road and within seconds it opens up directly onto the stunning blue sea!  Down here are lounging chairs and a freshwater shower so you can either relax and listen to the waves all day or go snorkeling and rinse off afterwards.  Snorkel gear is complementary at the front office.

The Villas

The property at Villas Sur Mer has a variety of styles that anyone can enjoy.  There are 1, 2 and 3 bedroom suites with each bedroom having private ensuite bathrooms.  Prepare yourself for a spectacular honeymoon suite with a rainfall shower head in the luxury bathroom. All suites are located across the road from the ocean and have access to both pools, bar and underground cave  leading to the ocean.

On the seaside of the property is where you’ll find the incredible 6 bedroom 6 bathroom villa with stunning views of the crisp blue ocean and cliffs that surround it. The 6 bedroom house has its own private pool and jacuzzi tub on the massive pool deck. This villa is also fully staffed with a personal chef and housekeeper so you don’t even have to do a thing except be on vacation!  You really need to see the stunning ocean view from here to believe it. You can also watch the divers of Ricks Cafe from your balcony on the sea side.

All villas on the property have cable TV, DVD players, wireless internet, Ipod docks, air conditioning and ceiling fans (which I might add are top of the line!) I was entertained for hours with all the functions of the ceiling fan remote!

What’s Nearby

The location of the property is perfect if you like the west end of Negril. It’s not on the beach but I didn’t even miss the beach for a minute because of what’s around the property. Directly across the street is LTU Pub which was a great spot to have morning coffee overlooking the sea, afternoon drinks or evening dinner. I walked across a couple of times just to enjoy the ambiance. The property is also about a one minute walk from Rick’s Cafe, a very popular cliff jumping and tourist fun spot in Negril. There are plenty of food and shopping vendors lining west end road and within walking distance, as well as pubs and bars.

Summary and Contact Info

My stay was WAY too short here and I would go back in a heartbeat.  The management is awesome and very personable (Hi Kimi and Peter!), the staff is friendly and the night security guard is very helpful.  I’m not sure I have anything to recommend that could have improved my stay here except that I want to know when I can move in!  This property is a true hidden gem.

MANY thanks to the management for inviting me.  This has been one of my favorite places ever visited in Jamaica.

Definitely will let these people know that it was you YOU that let us know about this place if we decide to stay here! I never heard of it prior to reading your review. The importance of your site for all of these places – you can’t put a value on it. I’ve already told a bunch of my coworkers about this place and how beautiful it is. Next trip I really want to spend some time in Negril…. crossing my fingers we can stay here!!

Hi Kristi, I’m one of your new subscribers. I have been enjoying all the current and past posts on all subjects and feel like I know you. I’m going to be in Jamaica next May for a glorious 28 days! Thanks to your review, Villas Sur Mer will be my first stop for at least a week. The staff were quick to reply with answers to my questions. “Dr. Bell” will also be getting a call from me. : -) Thanks a lot and keep up the good work. NeeNee

Once I let them know that your review was the reason I decided to give them a try, they asked for a link to your site. Believe me, I am already benefitting from your travels, experiences and advice. I plan to use three places I saw on here with my last stop being Port Antonio. Found that little piece of heaven on my own.

I’m so glad you told them you found it here. I wanted them to know that letting me do that review helped them out because they were such great hosts. Kimi, the office manager has seen this blog before and was the one who let me come stay there. Tell her I said HI!!

Where are you staying in Port Antonio? I don’t know the place very well so I’m always looking for new things to do.

Ha, I can hardly believe it myself! The owner is a really wonderful man and was willing to negotiate with me. I was originally staying in cottage 1(and was thrilled about that, too!) and he said, “Oh no, you need the honeymoon suite for your honeymoon1” lol. I feel SO lucky. And really, your video is fantastic marketing for them!

I will be staying at Holiday Home. It’s a quaint bed and breakfast with a nice staff, very clean, close to town and reasonable prices.

    1. That’s great NeeNee….I hope you have a great experience there 🙂

  15. I’ve had my eyes on this place since you first posted this. Checked today and they’re currently on Groupon! I think I may go ahead and book. Before I do, did you happen to peek at any of the one-bedroom (not “deluxe”) cottages? If so, do you recommend them?

    1. Cutia I toured every single unit they have and all are just as trendy, clean and awesome as the rest. They all have mini kitchens too. Highly recommend! If you book please tell them you saw my blog post….I’d like them to know my review is working.

  16. Gorgeous! I love the ocean access…we like to think outside of the box with our agency and this is exactly the type of property we love!!

  17. WOW!! this place is breathtaking!!! the most beautiful place I have seen pics of yet…the virtual tour video you did was amazing, it so makes this look like paradise. It must be really expensive..probably way out of my budget

Yea it’s pretty pricey. I was lucky to have been offered a stay here and it’s the ONE place in Jamaica I will never forget. My own home decor is inspired by this place but it’s still not the same lol. I want it to rain in my living room!

Hey Kristi, When is the off season in Jamaica? I have been looking online and it seems different for every hotel/villa? We are planning on coming the first two weeks in December and I would love to book this hotel… There is a big jump from high season and low season.. 🙂

    1. Kristi Avatar
      Kristi

In general, high season starts anywhere between mid-November to mid-December and ends April 15. Of course each accommodation’s dates might vary a little bit because they’re all managed by different people. December is borderline and approaching holidays so you’ll really have to do your research to find a place that uses Dec.15 as it’s cutoff date.

Hi Kristi, Jessica again!! You have been so helpful and I am really enjoying our blogging. 🙂 I have booked our last leg of our trip for a little spot in Negril, per your information. I was wandering, how far is Ocho Rios from Negril? We may just stay in Negril if it’s too far away. I love this place from your comments, but it may be a little out of our budget.

      Yea this place is amazing!!
Negril is about a 3 hour drive from Ocho Rios. Montego bay is the halfway point.

Okay! I want to stay here!! So, quick question… Do you know if they have a 1-800 number for reservations. I called the number on their website and it’s in Jamaica.. Ha ha.. So, I didn’t talk long. I sent them a couple of emails to reserve a room, but I haven’t heard back and I would love to speak with someone. Thank you again!!

    Hi Kristi,

I am pleased to let you know, we are almost done with our reservations for Villas Sur Mer. Peter finally got back to me via email and I am going to leave the deposit with him over the phone. Thank you so much Kristi for all of your advice and great help with the planning of our honeymoon. Once we get our room booked, we will just need to know what to do for the 14 days we will be in Negril. I am almost done with my paper, so I will send you a copy to your email once it’s finished.
    Talk soon!

Thanks to you Kristi, Peter at Villas Sur Mer gave us an amazing Jamaican deal. I told him I heard about them on your website. So, because of you Kristi we are going to have a wonderful honeymoon. 🙂 I am excited to meet your friend and go on the adventure you want us to go. We will be in touch! I wish there was some way you could be there in December, so we could meet. Talk soon. Jess

Hello Kristi, I cannot get a hold of anyone at Villas Sur Mer. I have called the phone number on their website several times and it says the mailbox is full. Do they have a professional phone number, instead of Peter’s cell? I was curious how you booked your room there. I really want to stay there, but it’s worrying me that I cannot get a hold of anyone.

I didn’t book there, they invited me to stay and do the review. I will email you the email address that they monitor. Phone might not always be the best.

  25. This is my first time reading your articles and I have thoroughly enjoyed all I have read so far. Have u ever been to the linstead market? I think u would get a great story from that experience . I like what you do.

    1. Thank you very much for reading Kayon! I appreciate your kind words. No I haven’t spent any time at Linstead market but that sounds like a cool idea. If I ever get over to those parts I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks!
