Treat Day at The Animal House
I know you all know about The Animal House because I keep pushing this place on my Facebook page trying to encourage donations. Well I went back to the shelter last weekend and I really needed to share this experience with you all because it was one of the most rewarding and fun days I’ve ever spent!
When I came back down to Jamaica earlier this month I found out my airline allows TWO free checked bags and I only had one packed. At the last minute I decided to jump on the opportunity and ran to Walmart the day before leaving to check out dog treats. I was so excited when I saw these huge bags of treats for only $7.00 cdn each and four of these bags fit quite nicely into my rolling duffle luggage, with space for a couple extra pairs of sandals.
When I arrived at The Animal House for my second time I got the same loud greeting – 132 dogs all going crazy to see who the visitor is. It’s hilarious! With the help of one of the workers here we carted in the 4 big bags; one of which had been opened because I was treating a dog in Steertown all week. Maureen, who runs the shelter asked if I wanted to be a part of treat day and help hand them out to the dogs and of course I said YES!! So between 5 people we split up the bags and made our rounds to the several kennels.
If you’re a dog lover you can probably understand how much joy I got out of this day. I felt like Santa Clause! And the best part is that we discovered each of these big bags has at least 200 treats in each! I had no idea how many were in each until we broke them open and counted. What I’m saying is that two bags were enough to go around the entire shelter and give each dog FIVE treats. And there are still two bags left over so they can do it all again next week! You don’t know how happy that made me to know my little $28 investment doubled itself in pleasure for these dogs.
A Couple Points I’d Like To Make
- I’m completely amazed that every single dog has a name and the staff know each name without hesitation.
- The dogs know their own names and respond immediately. They’re so well behaved and this place is so under control.
- I love the care and attention that Animal House provides to each dog there. It’s a true labor of love they’re giving every day.

If any of you are Canadian there’s a strong possibility you can check 2 free bags on your flight. I’m compelled to ask you to do what I did and go to Walmart, spend the $28.00 and check a bag with dog treats! They’re highly appreciated at The Animal House because the cost of treats here in Jamaica is not cheap at all. Even if you can’t make it to the shelter you can leave the treats with me in Montego Bay and I will make SURE they get to where they need to be! Like I said, this was one of the most gratifying days I’ve had in a long time.
