The Start of my Jamaica Addiction

Reader Submission by Tina K.

I feel like I should start by standing up and introducing myself….Hi, my name is Tina and I’m a Jamaicoholic. I admit that I am powerless over my need to visit Jamaica and that the only way for me to satisfy my need is to visit over and over again.

I first went to Jamaica as an “add-on” to a meet up with my best friend in Miami at the end of January 2008. At the time, my bestie and I were living in separate countries so we met up a few times a year for a vacation and some girl time (aka, lots of shopping). This time was for a few days in Miami, a cruise to Mexico, and then a few relaxing days on the beach in Jamaica. Miami was nice, the cruise was relaxing….I fell in love with Jamaica!

Now of course we had heard a few things from people before we had left about Jamaica…a few hesitations from them, a few humms and haaass, a few cautions. I found this interesting, listened to their advice, and was in no way going to let it stop me from taking this trip. I am so glad that we didn’t listen.

I knew from the moment I got off the plane in Montego Bay that I was in love. I had not experienced this feeling in any other country that I had visited. The sights and sounds of the island caught my interest and as we drove from the airport in Montego Bay to Negril, I almost got whiplash as I tried to take it all in. I loved the smiles of the locals, the sounds of the markets, the smell of the foods, and the “welcome” from all those we met.

We decided to stay at a local place right on the beach and seek out what we needed when we needed it on our own (no all inclusive for us). It worked out great and I would recommend it to anyone as there are so many great places to stay, great places to eat & drink and have fun; although I am sure some people prefer AI. In my opinion, staying non-AI is one way to ensure that your tourist dollar is going to the locals in a more direct way.

This trip was quite short, only 5 days, so we spent most of our time lounging on the beach, talking to a few vendors and locals, eating great food, we also made sure to sample the nightlife in Negril. However, we did not stray far from the beach. It was a low-key affair by usual standards but it was still fun!

My bestie and I have a rule about our travels; we only visit a country/place once and then it is on to a new destination. However, I did manage to convince her to break this rule for Jamaica and we went again for 10 days over New Years 2009/2010. My reasoning to her was that 1) the first trip we took was way too short, 2) we didn’t see very much of the island (sand gravity hit hard), and 3) Jamaica was just too beautiful to not go again.

Since this first little trip I have returned to Jamaica five more times with no stopping in sight. I now spend every Christmas and New Years on 7 Mile Beach and take other trips throughout the year. I once heard that whatever you are doing at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve, you will be doing more of throughout that year. Well, can’t beat that…I try to get in as many trips to Jamaica as I can each year. I currently have another countdown on the go and can’t seem to live without one; I have to know when I’m going to return! I guess I know that I have an addiction for which the only known cure is to book another trip to Negril. My bestie no longer goes as often as I do, she still has a few other places on her bucket list but she does occasionally meet me on the island for a little fun in the sun.

  1. Another person has discovered my favorite place on God’s green earth.I’ve been going to Jah Land since the 70’s and whenever I go anywhere it’s Jamaica preferably Negril and non-inclusive at a Jamaican owned resort like Roots or Jah B’s right in the middle of the white sand 7 mile beach. Either one of these beautiful Jamaican run places will treat you right with friendly helpful staff.I myself am a Roots Bamboo fan and just addore the Plummer family hospitality.Very reasonable rates and lots of returnies every time I go .I considerate my Home away from Home, Peace and Love Teddy may God bless and keep you and yours just the way you are. 2. Love your post Tina and I sooooo can relate to all you talked about. I’m a total Jamaicaholic as well. When you say you need to know when you’re returning, I admit the same thing. My friends and I just returned from a 12 day girls’ trip (a little over 2 weeks ago) and it wasn’t quite a week returning home that we booked again for February… our new countdown is on too! Thanks for sharing your love of Jamaica!!! Great read!! 🙂

    1. Sandie, yes I can relate too. Right now is the first time in 8 years that I don’t have a countdown or know when my next trip is. And it’s painful! However, these reader submissions are filling the gap!

  3. ya Joh so wish I had found Jamaica/Negril sooner, but then again, I can see I would be in some seriolus trouble! Gawd how I love Jamaica!

  4. thanks Sadie…I just started writing and reallized, wow if this was alcohol or drugs, my family would be holding an intervention!! I would need some serious help and support to stop…good thing I don’t (have to stop that is), cause it is clearly an addiction!! Hope you had a great time on your vaca….which how can you not, its Jamaica mon!!

Stay tuned, maybe JC will let me post something else…lol

    1. LOL Tina! I will post your next one in a few days. I like to space them out a bit. And I love your contributions. 🙂

  5. You are one of the few non-Jamaicans who can tell me something positive or negative about Jamaica and I would listen and take it serious. You have past the Tourist stage from your first visit, you have also past the visitor and Traveler stages as this is the highest stage most non-Jamaicans will ever reach, you my dear girl have reached the Jamaican Stage, now go get your passport and remember to vote or run for office.
