Our Own Lives and Debt Over Jamaica

Alright it’s time to be straight with me and with yourselves about your Jamaica addiction. I’m about to spill the creative ways I’ve funded my obsession for so long so you have to share yours in the comments below too! Actually when I sit down and think about it I can’t come up with anything overly ridiculous I’ve done to afford any of my sixteen trips but there are a few things in there that make me laugh.

There’s only one trip I can think of where I was completely scandalous in order to get my ticket. Back in those days a CHEAP ticket from where I live was $800.00 – no joke. One month I lied to my landlord about major car repair problems and asked if I could skip the rent and pay it back in installments. He was great and agreed and I bought my ticket to Jamaica. It sometimes paid to be a single mother because people felt more sorry for me and were willing to cut me a break sometimes but little did they know.

Several years ago I became virtually debt free and paid off my car, got rid of credit cards and all loans so life was great at a zero balance but I had no more credit cards. I didn’t mind not having them until it was time to start shopping for airline tickets which I did every few months. Lucky for me I had awesome coworkers who all collect points on their cards so every time I was at my desk and saw a fabulous seat sale I would just ask a coworker to book it! They collected their points, I paid them in cash and I was always good to go!

Another great way to get to Jamaica cheaply and I highly recommend it is have a BFF (I love you!!) who works for an airline. A couple years ago one of my girls added me to her family and friends flight benefits with the airline she works for. Before you hate me I want to point out the negatives to this plan! First of all you have to fly standby which is never guaranteed and I’ve been stuck and unable to board in different cities more than once! Unfortunately I’ve never been stuck and unable to board in Jamaica, only every other city trying to get to Jamaica. Another downside is that I collect points for this particular airline BUT if I fly standby I don’t get points for those flights. So in the long run I would probably have double the points and free flight possibilities if I’d actually bought confirmed tickets.

I think those are all the creative ways I’ve taken my sorry ass to Jamaica over the years, aside from just buying tickets and winning trips (twice). So now it’s time for you to share! Tell me below the craziest or most creative ways you’ve funded your addiction! There’s gotta be some great stories out there, I know you guys!

  1. I don’t have any way out stories because I have only been there once so far, but the one and only time I went was when Iasked for more student loan money then what I really needed, and used the extra money to go on my trip.

    1. LOL Jamie a true addict in the making heehee. You better hope student loans doesn’t browse random blogs lol.

  2. Well in the past few trips I was lucky enough to find a ticket agent/company that allowed for a minimum downpayment and then pay it off over a few months. This worked great for the tickets for xmas/new years as I was flying from the UK and the ticket was always over £1000 even though I booked 6 months in advance.
Now….lol…I’m also using the student loans to pay for the ticket and am planning on doing this often as my course is offered online so will be able to do some coursework while in JA! Soooo hoping to do the trip more often…lol…figures, being employed fulltime only allowed for 2 trips a year 3 weeks at a time…now in fulltime Uni and planning going more…go figure!!

    1. Haha! Sneaky Tina! Be careful, it’s hard to get work done in Jamaica!

  3. i’m feeling you JC,also want to get my financial future on track as well, keep your head up baby!,your a survivor!,blessed and one love, hope to meet for a trip down a yard one day!irie for now

  4. hang in there JC!,one love

  5. Best way for me was to work for a free trip. A few times I got my trip for free in exchange for working for a band that was going down to do shows on the beach with fans. I did web/marketing stuff pre-trip, helped with hotel arrangements, then basically didn’t do more than accompany a few tours once there. I’d do that every month if I could.

Otherwise, scrimping and saving and choosing to spend little at home was the main way. Sometimes I’d combine a trip to JA with a trip elsewhere, making the JA flight much cheaper.

Truthfully teenage kids schedule demands and college tuition is killing me so I haven’t been for 3 years. But this next trip is a gift from a friend and that, I am sure, is the very BEST way I’ve ever gotten to Jamaica 🙂

  6. What a crack up! Also know exactly what u mean!
Well I sold my engagement ring for a quarter of what it was worth last year!
I’ve also spent day n nite on websites hunting down how I can save a dollar on anything from buses to hotels.. Just thank god coz from Australia you pay a minimum of $2000 to get there so I do more than just skip rent, I skip my life and eat rice n peas for months!

    1. WOW Ohliz – first of all you’re my hero because I don’t think I could skip 3 years after having spent as much time in Jamaica as you have. But good for you focusing on your other goals! Maybe if I tried that I wouldn’t be a poor blogger lol.

And Naomi I never envy you with your flight costs to Jamaica. I whine about $800.

I don’t know If I have done any thing too crazy to get to Jamaica. I have used student loans, tax returns, and rent money. I feel my most scandalous plan is still in the making. I won a trip to Reggae Sumfest last year for a design competition that I had to beg for online votes. That was hard work, but payed off with free tix to the shows and stay at the Sandals Royal Carribean. I am currently working on a scheme to get me to the Bleu party at the Grand Palladium on Memorial Weekend. I would love to here more suggestions on how to book that free, or pay later airfare!

    1. LOL Jason I think you’re a member of a large group of us who have used tax returns and rent money hahaha. That’s awesome you won a trip to Sumfest. I’ve won two trips and the second one was to Sumfest as well – in 2006. It was awesome!

  8. I have never done anything crazy. I just work overtime to pay for my trip and spending money. Once I get that paid I usally start saving for the next and when I return from my trip I book the next within 6/7 days. Fun part is when I work overtime I can do it from home while lying in bed. I am one of the lucky ones who gets to go every few months

That’s awesome Daalin. I was the same way when I worked my office job. We got all the overtime we wanted so I took it. Half I banked for time off and half I took paid out. It was a great option.
