I spent two nights in Port Antonio recently and thought it was a big waste because nothing happened that I could write about. It wasn’t my favorite place at all, but then my friend who was with me reminded me that I have plenty to write about from one of our nights there.
Our first evening was nothing short of eventful even if they were crappy events. After we rolled into town and got checked into our villa we were hungry and decided to roll out and find some food. As we walked down one of the main streets we noticed there was really nothing going on here at all, but still no shortage of men who wanted to chat us up. So we took advantage of the situation and asked some of them where we could find some fried chicken. They showed us where and as we sat to wait for our food we told these two guys the story of how we just got ticketed by the police. The conversation turned from police to “why don’t you girls come have a drink with us”. After we confirmed THEY were buying the drinks we agreed to go.
We carried our fried chicken past the fire station where we were parked and ended up in some residential area sitting outside a bar that had no power. We watched some residents connect some power lines above us and then there was light! I wonder if they were stealing their current. As we sat and with our food and drinks we also watched a small crowd build on the other side of the road, we suspected because we’re white. The guys who brought us there assured us we were in a rough area and could have never come in there alone LOL. I think they were trying to be our hero’s and have no idea where I really hang out on the island.
At that moment we noticed the cutest little chunk of a boy across the street! As soon as we started commenting about him the father of the boy brought him over but that boy was really uncertain about hanging with us. After some coaxing he finally sat on my lap and as long as he wasn’t facing me and looking at me he didn’t cry. Check out his cheeks!!!
We were getting ready to go back to our villa and shower so we could head out after dark and see what this town has to offer on a Wednesday night. The two dudes offered to take us out and show us a good time so we said we’d meet them back later and pick them up. Well when we came back a couple hours later and saw them waiting in the street my first thought was “Is Port Antonio having their own Biggest Loser challenge?” I almost wanted to drive by because I didn’t want to be seen in public with the way they were dressed DWL! I don’t remember the details of the one guy but the other one was wearing light colored skinny jeans, a pink and white flowered collar shirt and white framed sun glasses. UGH.
If you know me you know I’m down for anything and the first place on the list to stop at tonight was the local go-go bar. I didn’t mind, been to plenty of them and was ready to go. We parked the car and as we walked to the entrance one of the dudes put his arm around me so I promptly removed it. His response to that was “you’re supposed to act like you’re my wife”, to which I responded that I’m nobody’s wife. We could clearly see this was the ONLY place Port Antonians go because the whole town was there. It was literally so packed inside you couldn’t go in and there was so much weed smoke hanging in the air I couldn’t stand to light my own cigarette. We were on the outside of the bar and I still couldn’t breathe. We only stayed about 15 minutes before I was bored, so we got in the car and drove til we either heard music or saw a crowd. I was already wishing we could ditch these guys.
We stopped at the first place that had loud music even though it was kind of dead and soon after we found out the bartender could have cared less that we even existed. The entire time we sat there we literally didn’t say two words to the guys that came with us because by this time we wished they would just leave. There was a guy sitting fairly close to me at the bar and I ACTUALLY slid over next to him and asked him if he knew the guys with us and if they were the biggest losers in Port Antonio. He laughed.
He and some friends went over by the DJ and performed and I’m telling you these guys were GOOD dancers! How refreshing, I was finally enjoying myself just watching them. We probably watched them for a good hour before they came over and talked to us and asked what we were doing the rest of the night. We told them we were going to lose these other two dudes and come back but they said they were all going to the go-go bar we were at earlier and hated LOL! We said we weren’t going there so they agreed to wait for us to drop the dudes off and come back.
We left the bar, dropped the guys off and by that time our moods were kind of disappearing so we decided we were just going to head back to the villa and call it a night. The FUNNIEST part of the whole night is when we drove home we had to pass that bar again and when we did ALL the guys who were dancing there were hanging on the street in front waiting for us so there was NO way to get past without them seeing us and knowing we were ditching out! We sped past them and drove off into the night!!
My opinion of nights out in Port Antonio….thumbs down. I guess I expect everywhere to be like Ochi and have something to do any night at any time.
