40 Legs in Jamaica

Hey everyone, I’m still in Jamaica and was inspired to post this because it’s UGLY as hell!!

I’ve always heard about “Forty Legs” in Jamaica – basically they’re a giant centipede and when I say giant…..I mean it!  I’m on my 14th trip right now and have never had the pleasure of visiting with a Forty-Leg til now.  I used to get jealous when I heard that first-time or second-time travelers had encountered them and I hadn’t yet.

Picture of Forty-Leg in Jamaica
Picture of Forty-Leg in Jamaica

I was sitting in my apartment one night with a friend of mine and we were just chatting when his eyes moved past me and got wide. The next word that came out of his mouth was “Bumboclaat!!” and I thought I’d turn around to just see a roach or something. When I turned around I jumped off the couch faster than if it were on fire and ran!!

My friend was wearing boots so he put his foot on top of the Forty Leg to keep it from disappearing. I was jumping around in hysterics yelling for him to kill it but then I yelled “WAIT let me get my camera!”. I’ve never seen one before and who knows when I’ll see another one so had to take the opportunity before it got squashed. This one was about 6 inches long and moved FAST! That just added to the disgusting factor.

After I took the picture he stomped on it but the damn thing wouldn’t die….at all. It just kept squirming so we swept it outside and into the bushes.

So that was my Forty Leg experience. Just thought you all should know LOL!

  1. Oh my gosh! What a scary looking insect!!!! I’d have had a stroke there n’ then…I’ve come across the black worms whilst in JA, and thought they were bad enough. I guess the speed at which they move does add to the uuuuuuuurgh! factor.

  9. I just got home from Ocho Rios. Got bit in the foot by a big 40 Leg! Hurt like a SOB! Foot got swolen up a little and hurt for a while. Its a week later and its still red and itchy. Nice Restaurant , Food was great, Dessert wasn’t!

    1. Woodsy are you serious?? You got bit in a restaurant? Which one? I’m starting to feel lucky that I’ve never been bit and only had a close encounter.

  10. OMG!!!! I am sooooo creeped out right now……you don’t even know. I couldn’t do it!!! Ughhhh

  11. My dad was bitten by one… i was in Greece 40 and he was bitten… it was so scary…i’m from Serbia and in Serbia there’s no 40 leg… at first, we didn’t know what is that cuz we never saw that cuz in my country there’s no 40 leg…i was scared… :O that insect is disgusting! :S

  12. Was sleeping one night on a greek island small house, one month ago. Got up around 3 in the morning having the impression something was walking on my arm. I searched the whole bed and blanket with a lamp, could find nothing.
Went back to sleep. At 4, again woke up. Again something tickled my arm just a bit; Again searched. This time was sure I didn’t dream it. After looking without success for some time, got out of bed and threw the lamp light on the blanket… Suddenly I saw its tail, hiding from the light.

    It was in the bed for at least one hour;
    It was very big. Much bigger than the photo you post; Like 8 inches or more;
It was very hard to kill.
    But it didn’t bite me. I still don’t understand what it was doing there;

    1. Lord have mercy KK!!! Glad you were okay! I don’t think I could have handled one bigger than the one in my picture!!

Are these insects only over in other country’s or are they in the US also because my wife has been finding insects that look exactly like the one in the pic but only way smaller but my question is why are they coming in the house and how and maybe someone can tell me were to look under my house for a entree spots. Thanks

    1. i’m pretty sure the smaller version are just centipedes. We have them in Canada too, I think they’re everywhere.

  14. they are not all that big, i seen several as i stayed there half a year last time, and with a jamaican i was dating, so any where we went he would spray… well it didnt take long in this place in the hills we stayed at, half a dozen came out. the most little one were the fastest, just moving in S… SCARY hehehe… i guess you just gotta watch where you put your foot dung. 😛

LOL Ms.B. I definitely learned to sleep with one eye open after this one sauntered through my living room! I heard they like to hide under sheets in cool weather so you better believe I flipped up my sheets EVERY NIGHT to make sure nothing was under there LOL!!

  15. we DO NOT have these types of 40 legs in canada. our centipedes first of all do not bite, but also do not have venom like the jamaican 40-legs.

  16. Omg I was. Biten by a 40 leg last night it really hurt I feel as if I was gonna die…even now it still hurts and its s day after….I’m reallly worried my entired back is in pain…..I haven’t been to c a doctor my mom have me some home remedies… I’m really in pain! 18. 40 leg bite remedy….keep a lg 40 leg.. (dead of course)..in a jar with rum. If you get bitten, this concoction will stop swelling and itch. Also, 40 legs are usually abundant around places where there is a lot of garbage lying around. They like dark places…

Hey Jo thanks for the comment. I’ve heard of the rum remedy before, but the garbage thing….not sure about that. I didn’t have garbage at my place LOL. I’ve heard they hang out in the bush too and my place backed onto the bush.

  19. OMFG!!Just got bit twice by a freaking 40-leg in my bed!!! It freaking hurts and it was only a little one too. i’m told they are even worse then the big ones. I scream and prayed and run to get the bug killer, I sprayed a lot and it was trying to run away , it took about 7 minutes to die!! Then I waited until my wonderful husband got up to pick it up and trow it away!!! It was discussing and nasty!!! I had nightmares!!

Why came to my house?? I’m now so stress to find more… Any chances that they cold be more?? What attract them to come in?? And how came in??? I keep doors close at all times because I hate bugs !

I kinda liked it after tht lol

  29. I had a frightening encounter with one last night which brought me to this article today. I was in my room just getting something when I stepped back and felt something soft underfoot then a tickling sensation -I swear it wasn’t anything short of a miracle why I wasn’t bitten! I moved my feet just in time. When I really saw what it was I had stepped on I screamed and screamed and screamed!!
Living in Jamaica I hear the horror stories of what its like to get bitten by one(similar to scorpion) and the one I saw was HUGE!
Fortunately rage took over and I was able to reach for the insect spray to kill it-boy did it move fast but I was determined it and me will NOT abide in the same room! eventually it died and a friend scooped it up and put it in a plastic bottle-yes the rum theory seems to work so we keep it incase of future encounters.

    P.S im still recovering!

    1. LOL glad you made it out alive Alanna! They are definitely an ugly force to be reckoned with haha.

  30. Hi! Was googling Jamaican 40legs and I came across the site. Got bitten by a big red one last night. It was painful and skin crawling! I was there sleeping when I felt a sharp stabbing pain on my left hip that woke me up instantly. I got up off the bed and turned the light on then moved the covers and there it was! I’m telling u this thing can move really fast!! However I managed to injure it with something and put it in a bottle. Off to the hospital because my hip and thigh is swollen. P.S these creatures only harm u if u harm them. Example by squishing them unknowingly. That’s how they’ll harm u. I rolled on it that’s why it stung me. KK it didnt harm u because u managed not to squish it. If the time is cold or its raining they’ll seek refuge in your home. More specifically on your bed 🙂

  32. Happened to me before but not the same thing,
One night at a Rented house (it looked good so i took it,it was a bang for the buck) i saw a HUGE rat,i felt like i was Usain Bolt because of how fast i was running. The next day i moved out .

    1. Hey Canadian Guy, I think I would have passed out if I saw a huge rat because those are a LOT harder to get rid of than just stomping on them lol. Eeewww I sooooo would have moved out too!

Its me again this 40leg kinda creep me out from I saw it in the bathroom yesterday, an just now I went to shower an saw a baby one an it scared the hell out of me

  36. my Story is crazy too. I moved to New York to live but return periodically to visit my grandmother in St. Elizabeth. On one of my visits after taking a shower (I had brought a little bag into the bathroom with me that contained my deodorant and stuff), I reached into the back and saw something move. What climbed out was something from a horror movie..the biggest 40 leg mi eva did see. There was a lot of visitors at the house that day but I ran out of that bathroom butt ass naked. Everyone was convinced that I brought it from New York. I highly doubt it

OH MY GOD Kiu!!!! I would die! LOL I’m positive I would have run out naked in that situation too! Hahahaha! But thank goodness you spotted it before getting bit.

  37. I got stung a few nights ago on my lower arm by a baby one, that I managed to kill. Searched the bed and flipped sheets to ensure there weren’t any more. Well, I got stung last night by a big one on the shin area of my leg. Hurts like hell, even my thigh has legions/swelling. I drank bissy tea (kola nut) that helped a bit.

Hi everyone, I was surfing the net to find out how to stop these hideous creatures from coming up the hole in my shower. Then I came across this article. Just last Wednesday while showering for work I saw a huge one crawl out the drain and I shot out the bathroom..DWL I am scared of every insect there is. Over the weekend I was pretty close to getting stung…was talking to a neighbor at the fence when he yelled 40leg! I was like.. where?! people the thing was right beside my arm on the wall.. I was so shaken up that I couldn`t even find ONE stone in the yard …which is COMPLETELY covered with pebbles to give him to kill it. dwl… I wouldn`t survive a sting trust me!!! God is good!!!

    1. LOL Crystol that’s an awful story! I seriously don’t know what I would do if I ran into one and I was alone!

  39. Omg one bit me this morning 3:32am in my bed, its so painful that I jump up and start crying out my sleep, but I wouldn’t stop searching until I found it and kill it, even after I kill it I was so afraid to go bk to bed lol the worst thing is that a bee bit me earlier in the day right beside where the bee bite me on my face.

  40. I have been bitten by four of those in ja am from the country side but the last one was the worst hurts like hell. I have seen and kill all sizes total i have killed over 50 some even 13 inches big and ugly

    1. Oh my god Rayon! If I ever saw 50 of these in my lifetime I’d die lol!

  41. Well guys I’m from the UK,
I have been staying with friends in steer town in Ochi Jamaica i got bitten by two babies while in my bed stings like hell, then i got bit by a larger one again in bed.
I then dreamt that a massive one was in the room so I redecorated the room cleaned it completely and found some babies in a corner killed them.
One mornin i spotted a large red and brown one near my bedroom door then i actually had a dream that a large one was still in the room which made me very vigilant and sure enough 2 days before I am about to leave this island the biggest one i have ever seen shot out from under a cupboard they’re so hard to kill and their bite hurts like hell.
I used a product called AFTERBITE that I brought with me for mosquito bites it’s very effective, buy some if you can you will need it.

    1. Oh my GOD Tony!!! That’s so awful lol. It’s funny because I’ve stayed in Steer Town many, many times and I’ve never seen a 40 leg in the house. As a matter of fact I’ve never seen one ANYWHERE else except my own apartment in Ocho Rios. I’m sorry you got bit and had to dream about those suckers!

  43. To stop forty-legs and scorpions crawling into your bed, place the bed feet into a container filled with a caustic solution, like bleach or kerosene. Make sure your bed linen is not touching the floor or the wall. Nuff respect.

Just saw one tonight In my bathroom on my shower curtain I almost died!!!! It was the longest one I’ve never seen and just my luck I was out of Baygon or any insect spray. I tried not to panic too much left it alone for awhile and devised a plan. I wanted it dead instantly ! I got my hammer and a bottle of Lysol , sprayed it with some Lysol because it looked like it was sleeping , well comfortable on my shower curtain UGH !! Woke it up and when it crawled to the floor smashed it with the hammer to smithereens !! I really hate these things ! I have a phobia of worms and anything related !

However it was raining earlier in the day and the weather was very cool as someone previously mentioned , they move inside when the weather is cool. But bwoy I’m traumatized now ! Can’t sleep !! Plus I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment complex so I really am wondering how it got in and worse if there’s more in here *shudders*

I have encountered two 40 legs in less than 3 days, I used a machete to chop them up both they just kept wiggling all over the place I let the ants finish them thou lol.. They both were about 5-6 inches long. Living in Jamaica growing up as a child you are made aware of these deadly creatures and how dangerous they are from a tender age

    1. Two in 3 days??? Wow I consider myself lucky to have only seen one in 13 years!!

  49. So i had an encounter with one last month. I would guess no one likes them but i on the other hand HATE THEM. One day i was home alone and i saw one on my veranda in the groove of the wall about 4 inches from ground…. i locked every blasted door then i went for my 8 inch stilettos and my metal shovel. I went on the veranda and use the back of the shovel to hit it about 12 times … i hit it till it squashed out and it was so scrawny i ran away left it lol .(i eventually went back and clean it up).

they don’t die easily my father kills them by chopping then in pieces or in half and burning them. also they hide in warm areas so your clothes if it is tightly compacted like in an open suitcase, your shoes,on and under your beds, etc (anywhere warm) i have trouble sleeping when i encounter one even a baby which is easier to kill and i will stay on guard the whole night i really hate seeing them they creep me out a lot.

    1. LOL I’m the same way!! Ever since this one encounter with this one I ALWAYS flip up my sheets at night and check. And if I need to put on close-toed shoes I kick the shoes before putting my feet inside, just in case!

  51. Hi Kristi, loving your page. Just got bitten by a baby 40 leg, my son too and that’s how I found your page but I ended up just putting some alcohol on it. It’s nice to see that people still ave good memories in Jamaica. I’m a Jamaican, living in Jamaica and I love my country.

    1. Hi Alicia! Thanks for commenting. It’s unfortunate that you only found my blog because of a 40-leg lol….but I’m glad you recovered from your bite. I’ve heard their bites are terrible! Thank you for reading, 🙂

  52. I NEVER want to see one. EVER! Lol.

    1. And I hope you never do lol!! Just remember what I told you…flip up your sheets at night!

  53. The area where I live is 40 leg ridden and 90% of the time its the huge ones that come in. 6 inch, 8 inch, u name it. The largest one I saw was about 12 inches (not exaggerating) huge scary creature. It looked as if it was very old and living around the area a long time to have gotten that big. The other day an 8 inch bit me and the bite wasnt that painful but the afteemath was horrible. Hate the little buggers.
But let me tell you that they dont like the cold and will seek refuge in your house after it rains or gets very cold. Bagon or any bug spray will kill them (I use pyro). It takes longer but they will definitely die. If u have a problem with them u can “bait” your house with sevens powder or ants powder. Just put the power at your doors and in the corners ans margins of your house as they love to move along those areas. Also if u see a 40 leg u have to kill it immediately because they move extremely fast.

    1. Suduki thanks for commenting and EEEWWWW! I hate even thinking about these creatures lol! This was the only one I’ve ever seen in 15 years in Jamaica and I consider myself lucky because of some of the stories I’ve read from other people! Even the comments on this blog post creep me out! Thanks for all the tips.

  54. Ewwww my daughter just scream out mommy someone is in the bed with me so I turn the bed side lamp on a 6 inch 40 leg in her bed I was so terrified went for my machete and kill it i was like did it bite you she said no im like you sure

Don’t go into the Cockpit Country then. There are huge ones there that remind you of films like Jurassic Park or King Kong. Even better yet, don’t travel to Indonesia or Borneo. They’ve got centipedes there that make our forty-legs look definitely small

  56. Andrew Avatar
    Andrew

Second, the reason they come inside is because of the cold. In elevated areas above sea level, it gets pretty damp and chilly. These creatures like to find somewhere warm so if there is no heaps of bushes to keep them warm they will aim for the house. And your body heat attracts them. If you don’t move, they won’t sting/bite you. They are also carnivores that like to eat spiders and baby roaches so places like Portmore, where there is a lot of garbage, and Riverton City, will attract them.
