Gloria’s Restaurant – Port Royal

There are only about 3 or 4 restaurants in Port Royal that actually show up in a Jamaica guide book and two of them are called Gloria’s. So we picked this one, and we were dead hungry when we got there.

The night before we came to Port Royal I was out for dinner with some friends in Kingston and one Jamaican girl told me that if you’re going to dine in Port Royal…..don’t go there hungry! Meaning the service is known to be so slow it’s almost in reverse. I take comments like that with a grain of salt since almost all restaurants in Jamaica are slower than in North America. But this time, sadly, the girl was right and we should have packed a lunch to eat while waiting for our lunch!

The surroundings in Port Royal are awesome though, a different feel from anywhere I’ve been in Jamaica. It’s a real small, old-town-ish, quiet feeling. I didn’t even know why there would be a police station here but it was right by the restaurant. And since Port Royal is pretty much just a little piece of land off the island and surrounded by water you felt as though you’d left Jamaica to get here. I loved the town.

So we waited for our food and were practically emaciated by the time we got served. I’m not exaggerating when I say we probably waited about 1.5 hours from the time we ordered so I guess my friend was right. DON’T GO THERE HUNGRY!!! In the restaurant’s defense though, they did have one large table of about 25 people dining at the same time we were. But we still didn’t get an offer for drink refills the whole time we sat waiting.

Also in the restaurant’s defense the food was fabulous. I only had a veggie plate which isn’t worth mentioning because it’s kinda basic. But my son had the lobster which looked amazing (if I liked lobster) and a friend of mine had the fried chicken which is my weakness. We also ordered a couple plates of fried bammy which is another of my staple favorites in Jamaica.

The prices at Gloria’s restaurant were quite reasonable if I remember correctly. The lobster dish was about $1200 JMD. I don’t know if that’s a good price or not since I don’t eat lobster but I paid for this one because my son was eating it. And everything else on the menu seemed right on track with restaurant prices in Jamaica.

Overall the food was excellent and the atmosphere was decent, the service was lame. Next time I hit Port Royal I’ll look for a different place to eat because I like to try new things. Then we’ll see if the whole town is slow or just this restaurant.

  1. YIKES – 1.5 hours to get the food! I would not have been happy, none at all! Food looks really good though 🙂

    1. Yah I didn’t like it either….I actually got a headache in the worst way because I was so hungry!

  2. Only 1.5 hour? You’ve been lucky! Last time we waited about 3 hours…
But, that’s part of Port Royal’s charm.

    1. 3 hours????? Lawd mi woulda dead!
I loved being in the town. It’s such a sleepy little place. I could hang out there all day!

  3. awesome place but super slow indeed! Usually go there in a group when photographer pals from overseas visit. Usually take the time the food is being prepared to walk around the town and grab photos. Photos below done by a friend

    1. Thanks for the link, gonna check out the pics. LOL if we would have known it would literally be that long I definitely would have explored the town while I waited. However it was pretty rainy at that time so at least we were covered where we sat.

  4. ooh well phone didn;t show up, here is the link – http://www.flickr.com/photos/dmadden/4394985919/

    1. PS: I’m SOOOO jealous of your photography! It’s fabulous!!!!

  5. Yeah!! the food there is good, but too much of a long wait.

  6. […] not the only one’s who ate and enjoyed food from Gloria’s at Port Royal! Check out this blogger who, like us, had to wait an eternity for food which was, even after 1.5 hours, still incredibly […]

  7. There is only 2 restaurants in Port Royal now and they are both Gloria’s!

  8. Many food establishments are slow in serving, but they would come and let you know why it’s
taking so long and one would not feel so bad. But there is an attitude problem with most of these JA. ESTABLISHMENTS. It’s like they are saying if you do not like it go else wear.
However the fish we had was quite enjoyable. Please check on your public relations attitude.

    1. SGB, yes I’ve gotten used to the super slow pace in Jamaica. I think if I wasn’t so hungry the day I went here I would have been more patient. Maybe lol. And what do you mean “check my public relations attitude”?

Since I live here for so long, waiting is not my problem. I enjoy every bit of the food. I go there hungry, because when I leave, I order so full..

Yes I suppose you get used to the wait after a while.

  10. I was visiting Jamaica the week of september 10-16th, 2015. I took my family to Gloria’s because my father law never been. I’ve been to this restaurant before several years ago but my last trip was the worse. I sat and waited and hour and half for my food. My husband and i approach several servers to place our order but only one young lady took mercy on us. I get to understand that you seat yourselves and the serves approach you but it took about half hour to get help. Two of the male servers helped customers they seem to know and although we are told that some people made reservation, sitting there for so long let me conclude that wasn’t the case. We talked to someone that might be management and we didn’t even get an apology.Instead they tried to blame the bad services on the young lady that was helping us. If i was to go back it would only be because of her. She was working hard like a dog, going up and down the stairs for customer drinks. On our way out one of the male servers remarked “dem need fi tell people say a hour and half wait”.By time we got our food i was not hungry. I’ll never go back and although i’m one measly person, i’ll tell all my friends not to waste their times going either. It’s been almost a week and i’m still very upset.

    1. Yes it can be frustrating Shan. Everything in Jamaica is slow….no such thing as hurry up lol.

Next time, call ahead and have a snack because you will still have some waiting time 🙂

    1. LOL thanks for the advice!

  12. I have not been to Gloria’s in nearly 8 years because of bad service to a member of my party which the manager was unapologetic about. It really is a pity that their service does not match the quality of their food.

We went with a resident of the island & she had called in our order ahead of time. When we got there we looked for the person who had taken the order and they started preparing our food. Our wait therefore was not as long as it could have been. We thoroughly enjoyed our food.

LOL Andrea, I concur! But that’s usual at any outdoor dining place in my experience.

  16. Man! You wouldn’t like to know what happened to me at this place yesterday. Came across this post while searching for a photo to use with my blog post rant. I’ll drop the link here if you’re interested. And oh yes, the service is always slow. https://adventuresfromelle.wordpress.com/2018/09/03/glorias-seafood-restaurant/

    1. Rochelle, your write up was just as frustrating and comical as mine was, and I’m SHOCKED that in so many years they haven’t changed a thing with regards to improving their service level. UGH.

Thanks for the heads up. There should be no excusing people that are in the wrong field. Service is just as important part of a meal as the food itself.

  18. I agree Mike! Especially since I work in the service and hospitality industry. If they would only realize that good service is their bread and butter.
