Scotchies Jamaican Jerk Centre

Jamaican Jerk Food

Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica in which meats are dry-rubbed with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice. Jerk also gives Jamaicans another reason to party under the disguise of Jerk Festivals. 🙂

One of the best foods to eat in Jamaica, hands down, is Jerk pork.  And one of the best places to sample Jerk pork is Scotchies Jerk Centre.  The Scotchies I’ve eaten at on two seperate occassions is just outside Rose Hall, Montego Bay and its right on the side of the highway for easy access when passing through.  I’ve since learned there’s one located in St Ann, near Ocho Rios.

Besides the fantastic Jerk cooked up at Scotchies, here are some of its other claims to fame.  Its totally outdoor dining under grass thatch roofs.  The prices are ridiculously reasonable and there’s plenty on the menu…everything from Jerk pork, chicken, steamed fish, roasted breadfruit, festival, and full bar service.

The first time I experienced Scotchies I was amazed at how they cooked the meat, it was my first time seeing this method of cooking. On top of an open fire pit they have large metal sheets.  On the metal sheets they have big slabs of pork, and those are covered by another large metal sheet.  Its slow cooked this way for the most amazing, deep and spicy jerk flavor!

Pretty much everyone including International celebrities such as Missy Elliott visit Scotchies and rave about the food.  It’s definitely one of Jamaica’s “must haves” if you ever pass through Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.

  1. I ordered almost one of everything on their menu in order to sample all of their great food! Since I ordered my meal without regard to the cost, I was expecting a big bill but the food was very inexpensive.

  2. In my two visits there I’ve had the pork, chicken, fish, festival, breadfruit and of course a Red Stripe to wash it all down.

  3. HERE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT FOOD: WHEN YOU WRITE ABOUT PORK YOU MAKE ME THINK ABOUT CUBA TOO. MOSTO OF THE MEAT CUBAN EAT IS PORK BECAUSE CHEAPER, I GUESS IN JAMAICA TOO, FOR THE SPIECES WELL I DON’T KNOW IF IN JAMAICA THEY USES COMINO, IN CUBA PLENTY OF COMINO IN ALL DISHES.

I agree with everything you said. The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is unique. One thing I wanted to add is that being a “cajun” from south Louisiana, the sausage is a must have. It taste very similar to boudin. Excellent.

  7. I LOVE SCOTCHIES!!! I am often in Jamaica and EVERYTIME I go, Scotchies is on my list of places to eat….sometime several times during my stay.

    1. That’s awesome! Yah I’ve been a few times, love it each time….even if not for the jerk, just for a Red Stripe LOL.

  8. Scotchies is good, but a little further down the highway towards Falmouth on the same side (right) of the highway in Liliput is a Jerk Place, Phoneix owns and runs this place and if you like the jerk at Scotchies – you will LOVE the jerk here! It is the best that I have had on the island and I have tried many places.

    1. What’s the place in Lilliput called?

  9. Scotchies!!! you will never have a better experience eating in Jamaica. I went there with a film crew and OH LORD. This place would be a regular for me if they had one out here in the states.

A nice finger food experience with a cold Red Strip. mmmmmm I certainly miss Jamaica.

    1. I guess it depends on your food tastes Lucio….I’m not as much of a jerk fan as I am a fried chicken fan and Jamaica has some amazing fried chicken in the least expected places! Thanks for the comments.

(my stomach is growling now talking about it) oh and yam! but im not a fan of rice and peas idk i no its like a popular dish in ja and they eat it with evveything but its not for me!! haha i cant get into the taste…

    1. You’d be surprised Melody, after being in JA for 2 months straight I got completely tired of only Jamaican food. In my last few weeks I was going out of my way to find restaurants with American food LOL. I’m ashamed to admit it.

I don’t know…I was a big fan until I ate at Pork Pit on the hip strip. Scotches just seem to be getting more and more “tourist” catered. It was kool before they relocated to where they are now in Mobay…something about that move. The new place is nicer but the old place was small, cramped quarters and really had a “local” feel to it.

    1. AP, I agree with you. I hate when things in Jamaica start shifting from “local” to tourist catering. Some things need to remain sacred!!

I would hope that someday any long time Jamaica visitor might make it to Boston Beach. It’s the center of jerk in Jamaica. It has umpteen jerk shacks each with a different specialty Anything that can be jerked is. If you are travelling to Negril from MoBay or Lucea you’re going to pass “On The Border” in Mackfield where Hanover Parish gives way to Westmoreland. If you love Scotchies (and I do), you’ll love On The Border. Perhaps my favorite restaurant in all of Jamaica is Little Ochi in Alligator Pond in the SE part of the country. It’s seafood, seafood, and more seafood with the fresh catches of the day sitting in open chest freezers. You make your pick and then tell them how you want it prepared. You get a drink, then go out to the beach and find topped fishing boat to eat in. Your food comes out with all the fixings. On my last visit earlier this year I tried jerked lion fish. I’m serious when I think it might be the best dish I’ve ever eaten. They get many visitors from Kingston on the weekend or when he has a seafood festival going on. Here’s Blackies web page. http://www.littleochie.com/

    1. Thanks again for the comments Mike. I’ve tried jerk in many locations across the island. Scotchies is good but I’ve had lots of better jerk. One amazing place is Luanas near Black River which I will be writing about soon.

In the last few weeks I meant to get to Alligator Pond but was sidetracked when I found a really cool spot near there and made a detour. It’s one of my recent posts if you’re interested in reading it.

I also went to Boston beach years ago and ate there but don’t remember the food standing out to me.
