No, this post doesn’t have anything to do with wearing wooden shoes on the beach.  But warm up your vocal pipes and show up hungry!

Nowhere on the island have I seen more karaoke than on the south coast of Jamaica, particularly in the Black River area.  But if you want karaoke with a whole lot of ambiance you should definitely try it at Cloggy’s on the Beach.  Why?  Well…..because you’re actually ON the beach and about ten steps away from the water for starters.

Seven days a week, Cloggy’s is a restaurant and bar on the beach just outside of Black River.  Once you cross the bridge leaving town Cloggy’s is literally about 3 minutes up the road on the beach side and they serve up some fantastic seafood, bammy, chicken and other Jamaican delights.  The area that is the cook shop is small and located a few steps from the large parking lot.

A few steps past the cook shop is the large bar area, excellent beachfront and plenty of seating for – you guessed it – karaoke on Sunday nights!

The first night I experienced karaoke here was Easter Sunday and the place looked pretty popular with a good crowd.  I think I showed up around 9:00 pm and karaoke was well under way.  First I should explain that before this night I had been to karaoke nights at a couple of different places over the previous two weeks and it was pretty lame.  Decent crowd sizes but no one would get up and sing.  I felt bad for Debbie, the lady who seems to run all the karaoke nights in the entire area right up until this night.  Down here at Cloggy’s there were tons of participants and lots of them could actually SING too!

Maybe it’s something to do with practically having your feet in the sand while you sing or the sound of the waves in the near distance but this place was great!  My nighttime pictures didn’t turn out all the great though, but here is Debbie up on stage getting the show started.

I really enjoyed two Sundays in a row down at Cloggy’s on the Beach.  The vibe was fun and the after-party (when karaoke finishes) was pretty wild both times!  Oh and the BEST part about Sunday nights here is that they light a giant bonfire right on the beach, about 20 feet away from the seating area.  It’s awesome and the heat from the fire is really soothing in the cool night air of the south coast.  There were many nights down south that I wore a hoody to keep warm but not at Cloggy’s!
