What To Do When You Have No Mosquito Repellent

I admit that mosquitoes in Jamaica don’t bother me at all. Lots of my friends hate that because while they’re being eaten alive I’m sitting back comfortably, not suffering. Well leave it to Jamaicans to have a natural remedy for EVERYTHING ….including mosquito repellent. This was the coolest thing that my “brother” did for our group one night while we sat around our outdoor patio table.

Apologies for the darkness of the video – it was well after sunset when we did this but I tried to lighten it up enough that you can get the general idea. If you have toilet paper, you have mosquito repellent. Take a good length of toilet paper, hook it around someone’s finger and twist. Twist it until you have a TIGHT rope of paper, and then light the end with a lighter. Because the paper rope is wound so tightly the fire smoulders and burns extra slow but creates smoke, kind of like a mosquito coil but not stinky.

He made five of these ropes – four we hung around the table as pictured in the photo below. And one of them we actually coiled up and lit it in the ash tray. He put the ash tray on the ground near their feet since it was their legs getting eaten to death! For the two of my friends who were suffering from bites, this did the trick just as a mosquito coil would do!
