Roast Breadfruit & Curry Chicken – A Breakfast Video

A Typical Morning in Montego Bay

In case any of you wanted to know how glamorous mornings were when I was in Montego Bay for 2 months, here’s a video post showing a typical one. A typical morning went like so: Rise around 8:00am to thug music, come downstairs in my usual ugly morning mood, pass by everyone and head straight for the kitchen to make coffee, have a cigarette on the veranda and then smile and get ready to face the day.

This morning in the video was during the time that my friend Irene was staying with us for a few nights and she was ALWAYS armed and dangerous with her video camera. Things like breakfast aren’t new to me anymore so I would have never thought to film this process but she’s still in the wonderment stage of loving every move that goes down in Jamaica. I love her and give her full credit for all the footage in this one!

I was living with 4 guys (and usually several extra people) for about a month. We all had our jobs in the house. O’Neil cooked and cleaned the pool, Mark washed dishes and swept the floor, Richie smoked weed and watched gangster rap videos, I did the laundry and the other guy (Mr. Incognito) watched TV. Occasionally O’Neil and I provided dance lessons to Irene on the pool deck.

I do have to admit I was very lucky to always have meals prepared daily. AND lucky that we had several awesome trees in the yard that provide nourishment – breadfruit, soursop, mango. The one thing I actually learned from these guys is that the 10 -15 breadfruit per day that fell out of the tree and laid in the yard are no good after they fall. I always thought these were the ones that go to waste because no one eats them but I found out that if they fall they’re no good in the first place. That’s the reason why O’Neil had to climb to get the ones still on the tree. See….I still learn something new every day in Jamaica.

I’ve seen breadfruit cooked a few different ways actually, but it always involved naked flame. Don’t you ever wonder who discovered these things in the first place? Like I wonder how many people got sick before they realized Ackee is poisonous before it bursts?

      Cool stuff.

OH and by naked I meant open flame. I’ve been spending too much time at Jamaican gas stations LOL! “No Naked Flame”

KIM you’re so right! I try to see everything through new eyes as often as possible but being there is so common now I really have to “look” and take notice. That’s why it was such a pleasure hanging out with Irene!

As far as breadfruit I used to hate it too until a different friend of mine made it in a way I’d never tasted it….drenched in butter LOL! It was sweet and great! And O’Neil is a fun dude for sure. He didn’t mind being on camera one bit.

LOOOOOOL @ the porn comment. You’re hilarious!

As far as what breadfruit tastes like….as far as I’m concerned it tastes a lot like cardboard LOL!! The reason I hated it for years must have been the way certain people cooked it. It can be really super dry and I couldn’t stomach it without some kind of sauce or lots of butter. I was fortunate this last couple months in JA, to have found people who can prepare it in a way I can enjoy.

  5. There are so many delicious ways to cook breadfruit and so many different varieties, with more than 100 in the Pacific Islands. The few varieties in Jamaica and the Caribbean are all the starchy Polynesian types from Tahiti.

How we roast it in cayman is cut a big x across the end with no stem then put in a 350 degree oven for about 2 hours til soft. First nite we eat it roast. Then second nite we cut it in thin wedges and fry!! Fry breadfruit with salt is my faaaaaaavorite! My kids ask for breadfruit fries all the time! LOL. Loved the video and yes the jammies too! Your video made my Jamaican husband miss home (he’s from Browns Town). and u kno how else it’s really good? Breadfruit salad, like potato salad. My friends her say the yellow heart breadfruit is best for breadfruit salad but I don’t kno how to tell a yellow heart one even after 10 years of living in Cayman. LOL.

Breadfruit salad and fries huh? That sounds like such a great idea! It’s kind of like yam/sweet potato >>>> So many options!

I’ve been up to Browns Town a couple times….ask your husband if he knows about Channel 5 TV up there?
