Half Moon Beach, Negril

The beach is NOT the reason I wrote about this beach! Keep reading, you’ll find out what is!

I always thought Half Moon was a luxury resort on the Montego Bay side of the island but thanks to a great friend of mine (thanks Alice!), I discovered that the Negril side has a beach with the same name. It’s pretty hidden and you could drive past it and not even notice. The entrance to Half Moon beach is about 15 minutes drive west of Negril and I would have never found it if I wasn’t following someone into it.

Once you drive in you discover it’s a little oasis all to itself. The beach is totally secluded, with hammocks, lounging chairs and quiet places to sit. There’s also an entire bar inside here where you can order up some cool drinks and things to munch on.

I also heard from Alice that they actually have little cottages in the bush here but I didn’t get a chance to see them. Apparently other people know about it though because we saw a few random people chilling around the property.

Perhaps the BEST feature about this beach – and the ONLY reason I wanted to write about it – is the public bathroom walls! The moment I entered the bathroom stall I knew I needed to blog it. I could have sat on the toilet forever reading the writing on the bathroom walls. Pure entertainment!

  1. Love to go there! Remove myself from the hustle and bustle of the tourist scene.I do stay all inclusive for the fact I have not been to Jamaica many times. I guess it is the sense of security I feel knowing if an unfortunate event shall take place, I can still eat and sleep everyday.I go and see the real Jamaica with my trusted tour guide AJ, from ajislandwidetours.com.

I’m getting pumped for my trip to Negril this June with my friend. We are leaving husbands and children behind. I’ve been to Jamaica many times, it’ll be my friend’s first. Haven’t been to Negril since ’98 <— college Spring Break trip. We're staying in a hostel called Secrets Cabins on Negril Beach. Have you checked that out yet?

Hi there. I’ve just retired (age 56) and am very interested in acquiring a position down South, love Jamaica, for a six month contract. Do you know of
any contacts I might write to? I was the Undergraduate Calendar Editor for a Toronto university so am used to working under fire and to a deadline with many last minute changes). My passion is travel and music.

Would appreciate all and any feedback you could give me.

    Many thanks.

Does anyone know if Judy is still wintering there. I spent over a month in Jamaica….and almost every day was spent at Half Moon Beach. We stayed at a friends house up in the mountains, but we also rented a cottage on the beach because we loved it so much there. It was shortly after they had built the cottages. You could hear the waves crashing on the shore at night. It was a bit of a hike to the bathroom, but we didn’t care!! We liked the privacy of the cozy cottage. I also liked the fact that we were living off the economy instead of giving all of our money to the big corporate resorts.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. It’s got great food and beautiful sunsets and privacy without all of the hassle of tourist type stuff.

Thank goodness we happened upon this place. After spending so much time there, I don’t think I could bring myself to stay in a hotel downtown. I didn’t mind visiting downtown once in a while, but it doesn’t beat half moon beach. Hopefully, when I return to Jamaica after over a decade, it will still be one of the best hidden treasures!!

    Thinking of visiting again soon!!

    1. One Love, thanks for reading and for your comment! I don’t know about your friend named Judy but I remember this place as being so awesome. Glad you enjoyed it!
