Crotch Rockets in Jamaica

I have a couple things to admit. #1 I didn’t even know what the term crotch rocket meant until recently. #2 I was pretty scared but exhilarated riding this one! Over this past summer I’ve become familiar with being a bike passenger but never on one of these kind. I’m only accustomed to riding on very nice touring bikes that are impossible to fall off of so this experience was something very new for me.

I was sitting at a random bar one night with my neighbor when a dude walked in dressed in a bike jacket and carrying his helmet. He sat at the other end of the bar alone and ordered himself a drink. He was only in the place for five minutes when my neighbor said to him that this girl here (me) would like to ride his bike LOL. How nice of Shane to volunteer me like that! The bike guy kind of laughed and said sure he’d take me for a ride after his drink.

We were in a great location because this bar was on the main highway between Ocho Rios and St Mary so we had a long stretch of straight road….I hate turning corners on motorbikes. I didn’t even get this guy’s name but I jumped on the back of his bike, wrapped my arms around tight and we were off! All I said to him is that I need to come back alive and he agreed to return me safely. We went speeding off in the dark and ended up meeting up with one of his biker friends on the road who rode beside us for a while. The friend then popped a wheelie on his back tire and sped up the highway in front of us with his front wheel up in the air!! I told my driver dude he was NOT allowed to do that with me on this bike LOL!!

About 20 minutes later we returned safely to the bar, my neighbor was still there watching my purse and the biker’s helmet. I thanked him for the ride, he finished his drink and took his helmet and rode off into the night!

Motorbikes are pretty popular in Jamaica probably because the weather’s always nice and they’re a quick way to get around. Even the pizza delivery guy delivers on a bike. Lots of the bikers I’ve seen are into stunt riding too, in my old neighborhood I could watch it any day of the week. I had some video of a stunt rider on my street but now that I’m looking for it I can’t seem to find it. Grrrrr.

I love riding too! My fiance used to have a Honda and at nite we would take leisurely rides through the mountains near Newell, Mountainside and Treasure Beach in St Elizabeth. We have a car now and the bike’s long gone but I would love to get another one in the future. You get to experience Jamaica in a new way because bikes can go where cars cannot…

  2. great story, can’t believe you rode without a helmet, girl you must be crazy! do you know what we call motorcycle riders in the emergency room??? organ donors!! please next time wear his helmet
    keep the stories coming…

    1. Jagal, I thought about that every second I was on the bike!! I was scared! My boyfriend back home has a bike also and I wouldn’t dream of not wearing my helmet!

  3. yeah, the bikes are awesome, always hear them zooming through town, even when your on the beach in ochie, not only are they a status symbol, but a good way to run that good ganja into town from the hills, speed is good when your moving prouduct, yes!

  4. just glad you were ok, I’ve been the passenger on bike in Ja many times wouldn’t go anywhere without the helmet even though it messes up the hair lol

    1. I know right!!! There’s no hope of nice hair! My long curly hair that hangs out the back of the helmet blows so hard in the wind that it locks itself LOL!
