Hamilton Mountain Uno Throwdown!

A couple months ago two of my American friends were in Jamaica and we planned a link-up! They had two Jamaican friends who were from Hamilton mountain in St Mary parish and the mission for the day was to find out where it is and see something new. It’s really great meeting new people in Jamaica because a new discovery always comes with it. So I picked up my friends and their friends at their villa in Mammee Bay, St Ann and we were off to the hills!

The drive was less than 30 minutes – through Ocho Rios and into Oracabessa, St Mary. We turned off in Oracabessa and drove up into the beautiful green hills. We kept driving up and up until the road was obviously not drivable in my rental car – so we just parked and hiked in the rest of the way. And we ended up at this cute house.

It was really so peaceful up here, we could hear the sounds of kids playing in some yard and of course, the sound of dancehall music coming from someone else’s house. Standard Jamaica sounds. Previously in their trip my friends had taught their Jamaican friends how to play the card game UNO. I thought it was awesome they brought the game on vacation and I haven’t played in years so it was on! The five of us assumed our positions in the living room and played a bunch of cut-throat rounds of UNO. The guys who had just learned the game a few days ago were surprisingly good and underhanded at the game LOL!

In the midst of our games the mother of one of the guys came home to her living room full of foreigners playing a weird card game. She stood in the kitchen and watched us, and admitted she was not catching on at all to the game but had fun watching us anyway.

When we finished playing five or six rounds the guys wanted to take us on a little tour of the area and find a local bar to have some refreshments before we left them and hit the road back to Mammee Bay. So we walked back to the car and I drove where they told me to until we came across an unlikely roadblock. Two cars trying to help each other on a single-lane, two-way traffic road equals…….a Jamaican roadblock.

The people with the car managed to move one over just far enough that our mirrors almost touched as I passed and we continued on to find a little neighborhood bar to chill at and have a drink. We hung out there for maybe twenty minutes and I had a cold Magnum (since they didn’t have rum). While I was at this bar I noticed this sign and it made me kind of laugh…..pork Friday. These signs are usually the ones that if you actually GO to the event they’re the best times ever, as I will tell in a later post about a sign that said “Riva Party”.

When we finished our drinks and got back on the road we took a different way out than we came in because the road was just too narrow to turn around. So we drive down a little hill and round a bend and saw the FUNNIEST thing EVER! There was a dude in his yard bathing naked and didn’t seem to mind that we saw him, stopped and were checking him out in all his nakedness! Us three females in the car were laughing our heads off and I desperately wish one of us had snapped a picture LOL!! So we briefly exchanged words with the guy, had our laughs and waved goodbye as we drove off – still smiling.

When we reached a part on the road where we’d find our way out alone, we dropped the guys off and they would walk back to the house while we continued down the hill and back home. It was a really fun few hours and next time I see these ladies we’re going to extend our road trip and find some more adventures!
