This post is near and dear to my heart and the discovery of the flask in Jamaica was an epiphany for me….the one who isn’t a cheap date at a bar! And years after my first trip to Jamaica someone FINALLY let me in on the flask secret which isn’t really a secret at all!
In Jamaica when you’re at any bar and you order a rum and coke (or whatever you drink), rather than just ordering a glass you DO have the option of ordering a flask which equals about 6 drinks (or 4 if you’re me). It’s cheaper to drink therefore you can drink MORE! 😀 And the result is pictured below.
Discovering the flask was also one of the most ironic experiences for me considering where I worked the last ten years. I worked for the government and we license things like liquor control and bars/restaurants. Why is this significant? Because at lots of bars when you order a flask they will literally take a large 26oz bottle off the shelf and grab an empty flask and fill it up from the large bottle! This is SOOOO beyond liquor control in North America where we’re regulated out our ying-yangs where liquor sales is concerned.
So the bar will fill a flask, get a bottle of Coke from the fridge and give you a cup with ice. You mix your own drinks and whatever you don’t finish at the end of the night – you pop the flask in your purse and take it home. See in reality Jamaica has the whole thing figured out! It’s like doggy bags for drinks – take your leftovers home!

My friend Prince said he is going to take me to a local bar when I visit JA in two months. I can’t wait to try this – ask for a flask of rum!
Can you suggest any local bars in MoBay??
I still say it’s the cheapest way to drink and convenient if you drink a lot like me lol.
As for local bars in Mobay, there are lots along the main highway around Ironshore. Also if you go onto the strip but look at the top levels of places instead of street level you’ll find cooler places than the mainstream bars. The best place though, is to go right into downtown where it gets ugly LOL! Top Class bar (the one in my current FB fan page banner) was a neat place to hang out….wicked views of the street below and the hills behind.
Top Class Bar – it is the one on your foot prints map, correct? Right off of Barnett Street? There was a spot over by Bobbies store that was always playing loud music. Do you know what that place was? I never ventured over there.
Yes that’s Top Class. A fellow blogger (Absolute Travel Addict) took me there and it’s a great spot.
Not sure which bar over by Bobbie’s you’re talking about though. In the 3 times I went to Bobbies I wasn’t drawn to any loud music. I could ask Otis.
