Bamboo Avenue – St Elizabeth, Jamaica

Video of Bamboo Avenue

Ever since May of 2003 when I was practically a Jamaica virgin I’ve been wanting to find Bamboo avenue again and drive through it, only this time I wanted to pay attention! That trip years ago was only my second time in Jamaica and I was a passenger and had no idea where in the world I was! Now fast forward to my 14th trip and I practically replicated the exact road trip from 2003 – from Negril all along the south coast through St Elizabeth and up the mountain into Mandeville. Only this time I was driving and paid much more attention!

I was also with 3 other Canadian girls on this last trip and one of them was on a mission. She must see Bamboo avenue, no questions!! It was really funny because I didn’t know exactly where it was so we asked a lot of people and most people didn’t have a clue! I was shocked that even locals who lived nearby didn’t know what we were talking about.

Anyway we did find it just by following the road to Mandeville and it was just as lovely to drive through as I remembered! However I don’t think I recommend filming WHILE driving! There are just too many potholes and I had to edit out the parts of this video where I failed to dodge them! Every time we hit one you could hear the four of us laughing in the background….I opted to edit the video to a nice reggae clip instead. Shanty Town riddim. Enjoy!

  1. thanks for sharing the video, have not seen it in person, lovely!

  2. I am pretty sure I was driven through there about three years ago…..I don’t think jamaicans call it Bamboo Avenue though….like how the trees form an arch…..seem to remember the trees being much thicker. I could be wrong though as I do not get out of Saint Andrew much when I visit…..nice video thanks for sharing. At one point when the truck was coming towards your car I was pressing an imaginary brake dwl

    1. Chelsea the first time I drove through it the trees WERE thicker. I think they’ve taken a beating from the last couple storm seasons.

  3. I could have told you where it was (smile)…if you noticed the shop right beside the river after coming through Bamboo Avenue, well that is one of the places i use to live as a child, tormenting the poor crocs on the banks of the river…jumping on rocks across the river (a rock jumped up with me once (giggle) and I soon jumped of…I guess the croc was offended that I thought he was a rock) and shrimp fishing at night with my teenage uncles. Was a lot of fun back then! I am living in Canada since I was 19 yrs though and I miss it very much. Saw it last year when my mother and I visited. Love it!!!!
