Fun Holiday Hotel – Negril

So a few of us pulled an island-wide road trip in two days and our overnight stop was planned for Negril.  A couple weeks ahead of time a friend of mine got on the internet to book me a cheap hotel and between her and I we found that more than one place in Negril doesn’t even allow one-night bookings.  But as luck would have it she found a steal of a deal on Travelocity for two of us. Beachfront double room for two for a measly $47 USD per night! Split between us, it was ghetto cheap! Excellent!

The place is called Fun Holiday and of course it’s right on the main strip in Negril, where every other hotel is. I had run across this on the internet before and always asked myself what kind of name is “Fun Holiday”? It just sounds so general….not even Fun Jamaica Holiday or Fun Negril Holiday. Just a fun holiday 😀 The internet pictures looked pretty nice and you can’t beat the location…a few steps from Seven Mile beach. So I was interested to see if it lived up to it’s name, even though we only had plans to be in the room sleeping for a few hours. Not sure how much FUN that really is.

Check in was a breeze and we found our room easily, had some trouble with the lock on the door but once we got through we found a basic and clean room. We each only had an overnight bag and a swimsuit….the obvious choice was to dump the bags and go for the swimsuits since it was blazing hot in Negril. I live in Ocho Rios where it was raining the entire week before and my apartment is on a hill so it keeps itself cool. For $47 we had a beachfront room AND A/C…bonus!

The little balcony off our room was pretty cute too. Our room was supposed to be a “sea view” room so we were expecting to have kind of a better view of the sea LOL.

I’m not really a beach person so it’s been a LONG time since I spent time just lingering in the ocean and it was marvelous! It’s been years since I came to Negril side of the island and I realize how much Ochi lacks a nice beach in close proximity. Seven Mile beach has always been fabulous and we spent about an hour just floating in the water. I’ll never figure out why beachfront hotels have swimming pools but in case you want a fresh-water swim at Fun Holiday, the pool with swim-up bar looked nice too.

After the swim I decided to rinse off and take a shower, which is where the $47 started to show itself. There were only two small towels in the bathroom….one each. When I started the shower the spray was pretty hard, not super comfy to stand under. And the tub didn’t drain, so the shower turned into a half full bathtub. I guess the good thing is that I’d only be there for a night and this was the only shower I needed.

Sleeping here was a breeze since the property was nice and quiet. The AC definitely works because I froze my ass off all night so that my friend could have her comfort LOL. At one point in the night I woke up wrapped in all the sheets and my comforter, only to roll over and check out my friend with all the covers off and sprawled all over her bed loving it! I’ve never used AC.

In the morning we decided to run down and see what the hotel had to offer in the way of coffee and breakfast. The restaurant was great, it’s right at the beach so the ambiance is nice and they have self-serve coffee and tea. We grabbed a table and checked out the menu which had Jamaican and Western breakfasts on it. I opted for some pancakes and fruit, sometimes I just want “home” food. I can’t remember what my friend ordered but I know she had a lot of nice fruit on her plate. The prices were more than reasonable….I think my breakfast was $6 USD. After breakfast we got our bags and left Negril.

So…my overall opinion of Fun Holiday in Negril….it was a $47 hotel. Nothing outstanding except the location – it was so nice to be steps from the beach. The room was basic and no frills but had cable TV and it was clean. The staff was great though, I forgot to mention our extra friendly maid who came to the room with the AC remote. She was nice and smiley and said hi to us several times when we passed her. Front desk staff was good and the waitress was very nice too.

If I was passing through Negril and needed to stay the night I’d probably stay there again for the simple fact that it’s cheap and it’s minutes from the town center. You guys know me, it doesn’t take much to keep me comfortable in Jamaica.

  2. Shane I’m not too sure it’s that cheap if you’re just a walk-in but both Travelocity and Expedia had great deals when booking a little in advance.

  3. I agree with your assessment, although I loved it.
I don’t need AC either and I was freakin freezing with my blankets and sweater too – lol.

The Mrs.and I stayed here for a week and I must say, we had the most satisfying stay! The staff was very tenative to our questions and needs and were very willing to direct us to any destination in Negril and beyond! Close to downtown Negril to walk to the shops and market!
