Fish is super popular in Jamaica, especially among those who aren’t real meat eaters. You can find steamed fish on almost any menu in any cook shop there, and its real grass roots cooking when you order fish. They start with….you guessed it….a whole fish.
One thing that amazes me when my friends cook for me in Jamaica, is the amount of flavor in every dish without excessive use of salt LOL! Back home I salt literally everything to make it taste better, but in Jamaica I don’t even see a salt shaker.
The wicked flavor in the foods they cook is a direct result of all the seasoning and natural ways they use to flavor their cooking. The next picture shows what went into my steamed fish….seasoning, fresh veggies and okra.
I didn’t watch my friend prepare the fish but it looks pretty self explanatory. I’m guessing he gutted the fish, mixed up all the stuff in the last picture, and stuffed it inside the fish, then steamed it. There’s no way to really describe what it tasted like except FABULOUS! So much flavor, a lot of spicy kick and the fish was so fresh tasting. It pretty much just fell off the bone and into my mouth! No wonder Jamaicans are all lean and healthy! I could eat this every day!

Hi Kristi, I’m literally going to look for something to eat after reading your blog entry! Where I live, steamed fish is one of the popular delicacies because it is a healthy form of cooking – less fat and oil compared to frying. Ingredients used include combinations of garlic, ginger, onion, chilli, sometimes adding oyster sauce and a dash of something extra, say mangoes, for example. You may like to try those! Here’s a website for your reference, unfortunately its not in English but I think you’ll know what to do from the photoes. Keep writing! http://rozzan.blogspot.com/2009/05/ikan-siakap-kukus-dgn-mangga.html
Yum YUM!! I’m a pescatarian and the more I eat fish the more i LOVE IT!! But more importantly, Jamaican men are the BEST in the kitchen!! I knew a rasta man who use to make me ital stew – if I had him cooking for me regularly I probably would have converted!!
Not sure what pescatarian is but assume it has something to do with fish? LOL.
I 100% concur about Jamaican men in the kitchen. Their mama’s definitely raise them right and teach them all they need to know in that department! I have yet to try Ital stew but found a great recipe for it I’m gonna try.
