Besides the fact that they’re cuter than all other kids put together, the one thing I will say about Jamaican children is BRING CANDY! If you plan on getting out into communities and interacting with Jamaican families, BRING CANDY!

I go prepared with those huge bags of lollipops you can buy for a couple bucks at Walmart. Other people I know bring packs of gum, basically anything that’s considered a treat. If you want to be popular with the little kids and see tons of smiles make sure you carry treats with you.

The first day I checked into my apartment on my last trip I noticed all the children of the staff that works there were playing around in front of the place. I was sitting on the second floor veranda and waved at one little girl down below. I held up a lollipop and asked her if she wanted one….didn’t need to guess what her answer would be. I told her to go ask her mother if she was allowed to have one so she disappeared. A few minutes later she reappeared with about 5 other kids! They all wanted one of course!
I handed them out gladly and told them I’d be here for two weeks and they were welcome to come up any time and get a “sweetie” as they call it.
