After years of being an angel of mercy and dodging hundreds of crabs with my car on Jamaican roads, I finally joined the dark side and became the grim reaper. I went on an impromptu crab hunting expedition.
After the heavy rains of tropical storm Earl hit the south coast earlier this month the crabs were out in droves all over the roads in the night. In fact, after heavy rains the roads are like mine fields with crabs and large toads. It’s almost impossible to not kill a bunch of them on a regular drive from point A to point B.
One night I was driving a friend home when we approached one of many big crabs on the road moving at a snails pace…so we decided to stop the car. For kicks my friend got out of the car and went on a mission to show me how to catch a crab, which is the first 25 seconds of hilarity in the video below.
The rest of the video shows the next night when a bunch of us, including my BFF from back home decided to go on an all out hunt! The nearly five-minute video below condenses hours of crab hunting capers all taking place well after midnight that night.
Unfortunately, I was the driver and the videographer so I’m not actually in any of the videos! Just my annoying laugh is.
As you could see in the video about 98% of the crabs we DID catch were pregnant females so we let them go. You can tell when crabs are pregnant if you flip them over and the underside is black. We were only successful in catching three un-pregnant ones. Probably because around 8:00pm that evening all the REAL crab hunters were riding their bicycles up and down the road in the dark with huge sacks of crabs over their shoulders. We waited too long. But the experience was more for laughs and to say we did it!
Once all was said and done that night I dropped the guys off at their homes and my girlfriend and I STILL dropped in at a big beach party well after 3:00am. It was a good night had by all!
