This is my second and last Jamaica accommodation review from my most recent trip, and it was a jewel of a find! It’s in the town of Junction, St Elizabeth, Jamaica which you may never have even heard of but Junction is surprisingly near to many south coast Jamaica attractions. I’m always on a mission to try and find as many accommodation options as possible for you guys!
During my last two weeks on the south coast I decided that I wanted to head up to Junction for the weekend and I knew from past drives through the town that there was more than one option for accommodations there. I had seen signs for a couple of places before. When I asked a friend of mine who lives in Junction which was the best place he told me that Southern Comfort guest house was the better option.
Upon entering the town coming from Southfield you’ll see a sign right at the beginning of the town for Southern Comfort guest house and I took a left down a small road that looks like it’s going nowhere. The road is called Women’s Center Road. I drove down a short way and took a right into the entrance to the guest house and was pleasantly surprised at what I saw. I’m never too sure about these small places in towns I’m not familiar with but this one looked beautiful! The property is much bigger than I thought, the parking lot is well paved and the office is located immediately inside the gate. The place looked super cute from the outside.
With small out-of-the-way places like this I wasn’t sure what to expect with pricing – sometimes when a foreigner inquires I feel like they could quote you a higher price simply because we’re foreign. But here, the prices are clearly posted in plain view in the office and they’re dirt cheap! Roughly $25.00 per night depending on currency exchange rates. Yaay! They also have options for more expensive rooms as you can see on the sign but in Junction you’ll never need AC to sleep. Because of its location in the hills it cools down really nicely at night.
I asked if I could see a room and a staff member gladly showed me room #11. I just wanted it for one night for myself and my other Canadian friend and we’re pretty simple and don’t require luxury. We were very pleasantly surprised upon entering the room.
Our single room was spotless with one queen bed and clean white sheets, the bathroom was sparkling clean with a really big shower. There was a flatscreen TV, free wifi, a closet and a back door that opened onto a small green space. It also has drive-up parking right in front of each guest room door. It was simple, very clean and PERFECT! I’ve paid more for much worse rooms many a time in the past.
With both windows open in the room we had a steady cool breeze blowing through and never even needed to use a fan.
This weekend happened right in the middle of us staying in a private home for a week that had NO water so we were dying for a shower and a shampoo. We got exactly what we wished for with the longest warm showers we could ever wish for, with fresh white towels to use afterwards.
Sitting on the front veranda we had a beautiful view of lush green hillsides and big houses across the way. The property is very quiet, pretty and comfortable.
The morning after our sleep we walked around the property a little bit more to find out what the on-site restaurant was all about. We went over there around 9:00 am and found out it doesn’t open until 11:00 am. That was a bit of a bummer since that meant we couldn’t get a real coffee to start our day, but we always travel with instant coffee in our bags so we just asked the front desk to bring us some cups of boiling water so we could make our own morning beverages. They were happy to do so.
Here’s what the restaurant and bar look like even though we never got to try anything there since we checked out after only one night.
I know you’re probably asking yourself, “Where the heck is Junction and why would I go there?” Junction is busy little town nestled in a valley only a few minutes drive from Southfield where the famous Lovers Leap is located. It’s also only twenty minutes drive to other famous spots like Little Ochie seafood place and The River at Alligator Pond on the south coast.
Southern Comfort guest house is within walking distance to the Junction town center where you can find everything you want! There are major supermarkets, lots of street vendors, excellent fried chicken and jerk spots in the town, all without the hassle of the touristy vibe. Also, the price of gasoline here is some of the cheapest I found in the two weeks I was on the south coast.
So there you have it…..if you never had a reason to visit Junction, St Elizabeth before, now you do. Even just to see a new town and explore a little. I personally love this town and have made it a point to visit there a few times. Now I have a favorite place to stay there as well. Next time I’ll check out the one called Junction Guest House just to see how it measures up. It’s always good to have options.
Below is the contact info for Southern Comfort guest house in Junction, although there are enough rooms here that if you just drive in I’m sure you’d get one.
