Jamaica Blog Awards – Getting My Trophy

Because everything I do has a story

The annual Jamaica blog awards were held again in Kingston on January 19, 2013 for blogging achievements in 2012.  I was supposed to go since I was nominated again for “best overseas Jamaica blog” but unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the event.  I was on the island but nowhere near Kingston and I can’t really afford hotel rooms in the city.  True story.  However I DO have a story about how I picked up my trophy from winning the award in 2011.

jamaica blog award trophyJust a few weeks ago I decided I was tired of letting my year-old trophy sit in a fellow blogger’s house in Kingston so I hailed him up on Twitter and made plans to head to the big city and collect my award.  I’m not afraid of anything in Jamaica EXCEPT driving around in Kingston because I haven’t got a clue where to go, which roads are one-way and have no interest in learning the hard way.  I would rather be lost for 3.5 hours in the deserted countryside than try navigating the busy streets of Kingston.

SO…..I tried everything to get someone to come with me for the drive in hopes that they knew where the hell to go to meet Kirk from Jamaipanese.com – the fellow blogger who accepted the award on my behalf a year earlier.  After several phone calls with no success I hit the road in my Budget rental car and decided to deal with the headache of this journey on my own.

About half way to Spanish Town my phone rang and YAAY it was someone I tried to reach earlier.  I don’t even like this person but desperate times call for desperate measures and I needed a navigator.  I even offered to pay his taxi fare if he would just meet me in Spanish Town and drive me and my vehicle to my destination for me.  I NEVER offer to pay for something in Jamaica so this is a big deal!  Long story short, the dude agreed to come to Spanish Town and drove  me in my vehicle to Jamaipanese’s work place somewhere in Kingston.  He didn’t even accept my money for his taxi fare.

My brief 15-minute meeting in a parking lot with Kirk was great!  We’ve been corresponding online for a couple of years now and this was our first meeting.  We talked about riding donkeys among other things and our biggest loser move – we didn’t even take one picture of our meeting.  Who does that?  Definitely not two award-winning bloggers who document the crap out of everything!  But I did collect my trophy and I really appreciate that someone I’ve never met before kept it safe and sound in his house for a whole year on the chance we would meet in the future!

KIRK!!  Again, it was fabulous meeting you as brief as it was.  We need a raincheck – although we’ll have to meet at Pizza Hut in Spanish Town next time lol!

  1. our short meeting did yield some quirky conversation topics and it sure was memorable!

Wasn’t a problem to keep your trophy safe, kept it in a box that holds all my Japan-related toys that I bought during my visit to japan 😉

Lets definitely meet up when I venture to your side of the island!… and this time we better snap photos.

  2. Awee that was nice of him! 🙂

I love how you make your connections!

Trust me – this one was a LONG time coming! Next time I really wanna hang out with Kirk and chat. I really admire how he sticks to his passion of blogging and learning about Japan.
