Lovers Leap on Jamaica’s south coast is one of those natural wonders kind of like Niagara Falls – you can’t even understand it’s magnitude until you’ve been there and seen it. Pictures and video do it NO justice whatsoever. I had to go discover it for myself. This was another fabulous road trip made possible by Budget Car Rental Jamaica.
While staying in Black River I wanted to make a point of getting to Lovers Leap but had no idea how to get there. I started asking around town how to get there and how long it would take. In good old Jamaican fashion I got a different answer from every person I asked. Answers ranged from 30 minutes all the way up to 90 minutes travel time so I was starting to wonder who was actually telling the truth. Instead I asked a taxi driver I met to come with me so I didn’t waste time getting lost and he happily accompanied me for the afternoon. The correct answer ended up being about 40 minutes which made me wonder which route the 90-minute people use to get there!
The drive to Lovers Leap was beautiful and easy. Only a few rough patches on the road and we reached in no time. I was unprepared for the fact that it’s a tourist attraction and there was an admission fee. I thought it would just be a big hillside that I could walk up to the edge and look over. But there is a front gate monitored by security who collects $350 jmd per person to enter. Upon entering you will be offered a “tour guide” – for what purpose, I don’t know because it’s obvious once you enter where you’re supposed to go…..to the cliff’s edge.
I suppose the tour guide will tell you the history of Lovers Leap but I chose not to fork out more cash and just entered to look at the view. The legend at Lovers Leap is really quite charming and if you wish to read more about it you can CLICK HERE.
All in all there wasn’t much to do up here except take in the breathtaking view and imagine how awful it would be if there were no barricades! There is what looks like it used to be a restaurant/bar that seems to only be a bar now. You’ll notice on the first image in the video that the words “restaurant” and “grill” are now painted over so I guess they no longer exist. There is only a bar up here at this time.
No Jamaica My Way road trip would be complete without getting pulled over by the police yet again. On the way back to Black River I was coming around a bend in the road and of course there was a random road block. Trust me I have learned my lesson about wearing my seat belt in Jamaica but for some reason I just didn’t have it on at this point so I started tugging away at the belt but it kept locking so it was no use. The officer waved me over to the side of the road and it was obvious he saw me struggling to get my seat belt because he came up to my drivers side and simply said while laughing, “Too little, too late maam”. So it go! Of course I was snapping pics of them through my mirrors to capture the moment. I am now known to Jamaican police as a repeat offender – I got another $500 ticket.

yes, this spot is truly awesome. If only the road was a little better. Glad they are open at all, because I think, occassionally closed bec of lack of money to keep things up and running.
Rosie, what I did hear is that the place was closed due to storm damage and that I might not even find it open when I got there but it was. It was definitely a TO DO on the list of spectacular things in Jamaica though. Quite amazing.
We went there last year and it was closed for improvements but we still managed to see over the edge – without barricades – and yes the views are breathtaking!
nice report Kristi, I was there years ago and ate at the restaurant. It was not bad… the usual faire. You did not tell the story of Lover’s Leap in your report? also on clearer days you can see ships coming by on their way to Kingston, keep the reports coming!! and your seatbelt on LOL Rumor has it your mug shot has been posted in Town with Major Crimes LOL
Ooops I went back and read your report again and saw where you linked to info at Lover’s Leap…… Did you get to Milk River Bath when you were on the south coast? not sure if it is still open???
No I didn’t get to Milk River. I was only on the south coast for 5 days and did a LOT of stuff – had to leave a little room for spontaneity too.
Thanks for reading 🙂
That’s a great destination to visit. Our island is full of culture and historic places; that’s what so beautiful about it. On a lighter note, I bet you won’t ever forget to put your seatbelt on again…DWL.
It was amazing up there! This is what I love about Jamaica – all the wonderful history there. And I’m not so sure about the seat belt thing – I’ve forgotten a few times and they catch me every time lol.
awesome story, sorry about the timing with your seat belt, luckily the fine is not too bad, looking forward to your next story!,thanks for sharing
Thanks Shane! The fine wasn’t bad at all – $500 jmd is only about $6 usd so it doesn’t hurt too much.
by the way, love the music, perfect for the video and pics, big up!
Just to let you know that YES, Milk River bath is up and running. Beautiful, quaint place. The road has been improved, they fixed most potholes. Even the one that runs along the coast to Alligator Pond.
I think Lover’s Leap must be owned by the Southcoast Resort Board (SCRB) now , that’s what I have read.
I love Lovers leap.
