What YOU Said About Jamaica Tourist Attractions

In the last newsletter I posed two simple questions to you all. What is your MOST favorite and LEAST favorite Jamaican tourist attraction. The answers were quite varied and interesting – some people’s most favorite were other people’s least favorites. I understand a lot of us don’t typically do tourist attractions in Jamaica but we were all beginners at one time and are bound to have tried at least a couple of them. I’ve done a lot of touristy things in Jamaica and I think they all have their merits depending on what stage of the travel game you’re at. There are some that I’ve done solely because of this blog and quite enjoyed them!

Here’s the feedback. Somehow I knew Dunns River would make the cut and I was surprised to see it on both sides of the list.

Your LEAST Favorite Jamaica Tourist Attractions

Fern Gully bus tour: The idea and story are cool, but you can’t see anything. You’re driving up a road in a covered minibus, all you can see is what’s out your window. The beautiful canopy of trees is hidden by the roof of the vehicle.

Green Grotto Caves: While yes, it was kind of cool, it was expensive for what it was, kind of boring, and eh..I wouldn’t go back.

Treasure Beach: WORST……has to be, without any doubt in my mind, TREASURE BEACH. What exactly is there TO like??? A bar or two maybe, beach and????? I see nothing whatsoever to rave about this place because its just boring.

Dunns River Falls: It’s the best and worst – beautiful, if you can somehow ignore the bijillion people there.

My LEAST Favorite

Dunns River Falls: Yes it is gorgeous but it’s ruined by all the people. There’s no chance to go in there and truly enjoy it for what it is.

Rick’s Cafe: Although I could watch those divers for hours on end, same problem….the crowd is annoying and the overpriced restaurant and bar ruin it. What also ruins it is my attention span….it takes the divers SO long trying to generate tips from the crowd that I lose interest in what they’re actually doing. I do understand it’s their livelihood but it gets boring. Watching the sunset from Rick’s is it’s only redeeming quality.

Your MOST Favorite Jamaican Tourist Attractions

Port Royal: Friendly people, beautiful surroundings, good food, free tour guide (well we got one anyway), and the dizzy (or giddy) house was the BOMB! I loved it there so much I’m going back!!!

Stewart Castle: Probably the only tourist attraction I’ve ever WANTED to visit.

Dunns River Falls: Done it 4 or 5 times, still love it! The craft market at the end is another story though.

YS Falls: The thing I liked best about YS Falls was the drive there. We stopped in a really neat Jamaican small town – don’t remember the name – just to get a cool drink, and I was able to take some pictures of their post office and a few other things. It was my first time experiencing the twists, turns, and bumps of the roads in Jamaica, and it was pretty cool. Swimming in the falls was amazing! The water felt great!

Catamaran Ride: The Catamaran trip was a blast for one reason, and one reason only…..FREE RUM PUNCH! It was a total touristy/party experience, but a lot of fun. I would do it again. ๐Ÿ™‚

My MOST Favorite

Port Royal: Hands down, one of the coolest places I’ve been in Jamaica. The town and the historical tour of the ruins are amazing. And the history of pirates is so fascinating.

Prospect Plantation: Absolutely loved the information overload on this tour. Well worth the price, BEAUTIFUL and educational.

Glistening Waters (Luminous Lagoon): Super cool night tour of something you can’t find just anywhere! It’s a true wonder of nature and very intriguing.

  1. I guess I lucked out at Dunn’s river, because I only wanted to be in the large pool area just below the falls, I opted out of the full walk and the tour guide brought me and two other gals there. I went in and out of the water all by myself for a good hour before the groups came through! It was so private and quite I just loved it, but can see how it could be too much as after the groups came I was gone LOL
I loved reading this blog and look forward to my next trip and will check out Port Royal and YS Falls!
    Thanks ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Thanks Vera! I liked seeing all the different responses too. It’s interesting how we all appreciate things in our own way!

    Great selection of comments!

  3. Tip for Dunn’s River Falls: AVOID CRUISE SHIP DAYS!! We’ve visited the falls 4 or 5 times, and have learned that Wednesday is a HUGE cruise ship day, there are usually 4 to 6 ships on the island that day making the falls BUSY!! If you go on a Tuesday, you’ll have much lower crowds. Another tip….Don’t go after a hard rain. The falls are CRAZY and cold! One last tip..if you go towards the end of the day (preferrably the last tour) you will get exceptional tour guide, as well as lower crowd.

    1. Good tips Angel. It’s so hard to know when cruise ship days are now, they seem to come randomly. Like yesterday was Thursday and there were TWO ships docked in Ochi.

  4. I love enchanted gardens
Stewart’s Castle was pretty cool. Really would love to do a photo shoot there.
    Definitely love the great houses!

    1. That would be an AWESOME place for a photo shoot. Imagine wedding pics up there? So cool! Does that make me sound weird? Most people want their weddings on a beach LOL.

Treasure Beach? What is there to like?? ………well I guess it’s the things that you didn’t get to see or enjoy. Surely there is more than beach and bars. There are beaches, 6 in all and other hidden gems appreciated by the ones who find them when visit this treasured place

  6. I disagree about Treasure Beach.
I love the people and the laid back beaches. I’ll be there again this week after a few days in Ocho (first time there).

    1. I feel the same way you do Kim. I prefer the quiet side of the island. Funny, we’ll be in the same places at the same time. Have a great vacation!
