Road Trip With A Rasta

If You Don’t Eat Meat….

I’m not a vegetarian but have whittled myself down to chicken and fish for the most part, with the occasional dish of jerk or barbequed pork. However, after making this discovery in Mandeville I am confident that I could completely and healthily eliminate meat from my diet if I had access to this food at all times.

I mentioned a random road trip I did from Montego Bay to Kingston in this post a few weeks ago. What I didn’t mention is that we stopped in Mandeville both ways, and that the friend who accompanied me is a Rasta. I had no reason to mention that until I remembered that I wanted to blog about the most awesome food I tried in Mandeville. What you see in the photo above is a baked broadbean loaf in a tangy sauce with bulgar wheat (the rice looking part) and salad. It was all topped off with a nice cold cup of soursop juice that tasted like lemonade!

The food shop literally has no name and I couldn’t ever tell you how to get back there but I do know it’s close to the hospital in Mandeville. I only know that because I texted my friend long after the fact to ask him. My blogger spidey senses were not tingling that day so I forgot to even take pictures of the place or the menu on the wall. But everything they served was 100% vegetarian and vegan. They had various dishes and snacks, all made with ingredients you’d find in a health food store. I’m telling you, the more I’m out and about in Jamaica the more I discover these hidden gems that remind me of home – only Jamaican style. If I had the money, I would definitely franchise this particular shop.

If you’re planning a road trip in Jamaica and like meatless meals my advice is to TAKE A RASTA WITH YOU! Again, I’m not a vegetarian but I could definitely convert if I had access to these kinds of recipes all the time.

  1. I love Rasta food. There are a couple of Vegan spots in Brooklyn run by Jamaicans and the food is absolutely delicious!

I know right! There seems to be so much variety too…who knew!

  2. I don’t know much about Rasta food or vegetarian fare, but I do know that that looks and sounds scrumptious!

It really was Dawn…it’s amazing and I was thinking of Googling “broadbean loaf” to see if I can replicate it LOL.

I’ve eaten at that same place – about 10 days ago in fact. Loved it!

Same place?? What are the chances huh! It’s really in such a nondescript place with no name that unless you knew about it you’d never know about it – if that makes sense LOL!!

Looks delicious! The bulgar wheat looks like something I want to try.

That looks like a decent amount of food. Did you finish it in one sitting?

Absolutely not LOL! I ate the other half for dinner! It really was a great meal and I think less than $400 (Someone else paid so I can’t be sure of the price). It was the tangy sauce that made it so awesome.

  5. Jamaica is still on my to do list and you’re doing a very good job of pushing it to the top of the list. That food looks yummy!

  6. Great! Last September my wife and I visited MoBay and Negril and there was a lot of jerk meat in the Jamaican diet. It helps to know of these other options for our next trip back!
    Keep up the great work.

Yes make sure to ask around because there ARE lots of options in Jamaica for vegetarians or even people who just don’t like meat.

I used to have a jewellers shop in Montego Bay on Union Street and every lunch time I would go to my Rasta friend who had a barrow where he served veggie chunks, rice and peas and salad.
Now, the name of the street slips my mind but if your in St James Street facing Sam Sharpe it’s the side turning on the right…the side street looks a bit suspsicious but it’s ok and the food my friend sold for $200 was the best ever!

I actually really like chunks and beans. I could almost be a full vegetarian in Jamaica if not for fried chicken and saltfish.
