Check Your Weapons

Not that there would ever be a necessity for this elsewhere but I’ve gotta hand it to Jamaicans to be this organized at high profile public events! I’ve also never seen this at any other events besides this one – the Boscobel air show in St Mary, Jamaica. They actually had a security truck sitting at the entrance gate where you can / must check your weapons! My apologies for the image quality but I took the picture with my Blackberry because I didn’t want to look so obvious.

The reason I was hanging around outside this truck is because the people I attended the air show with are soldiers and they actually had to go inside the truck and check their licensed firearms.

Along with all the illegal weapons carriers, there are lots of people in Jamaica who carry legal and licensed firearms and weapons. At this event while walking through the admission gates they check your belt and your bag for firearms and if you’re packin’ they usher you through a separate line where you end up at this truck. You then wait in this line and enter the truck one by one, hand over your piece and they check it and keep it until you leave.

I suspected the reason I’ve never seen this before is because this was an international event and there was a pretty decent military presence at the Boscobel air show. Most events I attend in Jamaica aren’t so formal. I was totally amused by this whole process, probably because where I come from NO weapons are legal to carry. Anyway, that was just another interesting thing I found in Jamaica!

  1. They have this at most parties and events (that I attend),the reason you don’t normally see it is that they usually are less conspicuous as licensed fire arms holders don’t like to ‘advertise’ that they are carrying for obvious security/safety reasons.

    1. thanks for the comment Cami. I suspect those events are the more publicized and larger ones. I haven’t gone to a big event in a long time, mostly community parties or dances.

  2. like a texas shootout, never thought this would come to be,but i guess the good guys will be out gunned by the bad guys without legal fire arms carriers, anyway,i can remember gun talk in public was hush hush in the 1980’s,you could go to prison for just having bullets, how are the gun laws in england these days?,being original jamaican laws were formed from british laws, one love
