This is quite possibly going to be my shortest blog post ever but I’ve saved this photo for months just to show you! It was the most peculiar thing I randomly noticed for the first time in all my years of traveling to Jamaica. The “cold drink fee”.
Apparently when you buy a cold drink in a supermarket or corner store in Jamaica you get charged $5.00 jmd for the luxury of having it cold! I guess someone has to pay the bill for having the refrigerator plugged in! Oh and if you really want the conversion on that it’s equal to roughly six cents USD.

yes! hahaha, had to use the public washroom at one of Ochi’s busiest shopping centers once and had to pay a lady $10 JMD who was sitting outside on a lawn chair to use the toilet paper she was holding!!! I never got a receipt like you though!! Soooo odd! Cold drinks and toilet paper, serious luxuries in Jamaica!
LOL Mel I know right! all the bars I’ve been to in Jamaica keep the toilet paper behind the bar and you have to ask for it.
That is normal practice in Jamaica…..ALL cold drinks cost more than the shelf ones…..its a contribution towards their electricity bill….as if we don’t pay enough for our own as it is…..!
Yep that’s exactly what I said in the post. I should have charged people to come in my house too and pay my JPS bill.
Funny thing is, the only store I ever saw this extra fee was the same one you shopped at!! ๐
hmm, interesting, never paid such a fee. I know of a fee for glass bottles but this is new. I will investigate!
I don’t know if it’s every store but it’s definitely one or two in Ochi that have it. Strange!
