I suppose anyone anywhere could write about making mint tea but since I’m in Jamaica it fits on my Jamaican blog. I’ve never made tea this way but I know they make tea out of everything here….they even have one called bush tea. But it tastes bad so I don’t drink it.
Some of my American friends had Jamaican friends up in Hamilton, St Mary so we drove up into the countryside to visit with them. The people who lived there pointed out all the fruit trees and things in their yard and one of them happened to be a mint tree (bush?). They picked a piece off the tree and it smelled so fresh and yummy, then he asked if I wanted some mint tea.
I drink mint tea back home too so of course I wanted to try the fresh version of it. So he took the piece from the tree and put it in a pot of water on the stove, lit the flame and said to let it sit in the water until one minute after boiling point.
After it boiled he put some sugar in a cup and then added the hot water from the pot, leaving out the mint leaves. Mix it up so the sugar disappears and you have yourself an awesome and fresh tasting sweet mint tea. I loved it! First thing I though of was what a wicked COLD drink this would make if you put a whole pitcher of it in the fridge after it’s made.
I asked him before we left the place if I could have some of the leaves to bring back to my apartment and he gave me a whole bag full. It kind of looks like something else in the bag LOL. “I swear officer….it’s mint leaves!” I brought the bag of mint leaves home and intend to buy a juice jug today and make one big pot of the sweet tea to chill and drink cold.
I also clipped a piece off before drying the rest and stuck it in some water. I’m going to plant it to see if it can grow in my yard 😀

You going to bring this newfound talent home & teach us?!
Like it’s hard Tanya LOL! I don’t think we’ll find this fresh of mint leaves at home.
Sounds delicious! I think it fits perfectly on this blog. I love to see anything you experience in Jamaica.
Hello I’m Jamaican and often make fresh mint tea after boiling pore it into a cup, however many Jamaicans use condensed milk instead of sugar. You can also drink it with Jamaican water crackers or soke them in the tea.
