In all my trips to Jamaica and even to Spanish Town I’ve never once gone through the town center and stopped at the old burnt out government buildings. I’ve only ever passed through there and I even remember about 6 years ago the person who drove me through said if we stopped I’d get shot LOL. Now that I know more about Jamaica I know that’s all crap.
This area in the center of Spanish Town – Emancipation Square – was very quiet, only a few cars drove through while we were in there taking pictures. I was fascinated by the age of the buildings and by how pretty the square was. We parked the car at the museum which I didn’t go inside, and then just walked around the square checking out the buildings. Some are burnt out and some are still operating as government offices.
Spanish Town used to be the capital of Jamaica from the 16th to 19th century, which is why all these buildings are here. The city is home to numerous memorials, the national archives, a small population, and one of the oldest Anglican churches outside of England. Now the mayor of Spanish Town occupies one of these buildings.
I was surprised to see a no smoking sign at Emancipation Square since you can pretty much smoke anywhere you please in Jamaica. I think it was nice to see that they maintain this rule though, keeps the place nice and welcoming for everyone.
And by the way, if you ever want to go to Spanish Town and see this place, I highly recommend it if you like beautiful pieces of history. It reminded me a lot of Port Royal with the awesome buildings and interesting historical information. It’s neat to know what an old town I was standing in the middle of.

Spanish town is an historical treasure but due to short sightedness of our Government and town planners it will never realize its potential that is such a shame. Also most Jamaicans do not have any respect for old historical buildings, they love to bulldoze and rebuild.
Thank you for sharing…

And I heard the government was considering refurbishing Port Royal too and to me, if they did that it would lose it’s charm. Some things should remain a REAL piece of history……
Thanks for your comments. 🙂
I was in emancipation square in april this year, the buildings surely are breathtaking, it is certainly a shame they are not going to be refurbished and made into museums or something along those lines, I was amused at the wildlife hanging round the roadsides too they all have road sense, I observed one looking both ways before crossing the road when it was clear to go , now that tickled me lol 🙂
I have pics of the buildings and monument and all so the said goat before and as it crossed the road haha.
That’s when I was there, in April. And yes I love how the animals are so road-smart in Jamaica. Unfortunately not all of them are but most!
Spanish Townnn!!!! LOVEEE these photos especially the assembly House! There’s a special place in my heart for that square!
I’m the same Ayo…Spain is pretty much my favorite place to visit. I love the realness of it and the history there.
