Moving to Jamaica

If you’ve been following me on Facebook at all you’ll know that in 13 days from now I’m relocating to Jamaica on a more permanent basis. I’ve been building up to this for years and now that it’s finally approaching (FAST!) I’m getting less excited and more nervous! But excited still. The shift in lifestyle is already becoming a reality as I lay my stuff out to pack. Like I no longer have a job and a regular paycheck so I have to hustle like the rest of the self-employed world. Although somehow hustling in Jamaica seems more feasible than hustling in Canada.

I also have an overwhelming feeling of sadness and dread now that the day is coming closer to leaving. I’m beyond sad to be leaving my son (who’s grown) and will worry about him every single minute. And the WORST is that I’m going to miss my dog! It’s just because I can talk to family on the phone and they understand why I’m not coming home but my dog will just be lost and not understand. My mom tells me that even when I’m on vacation my dog lays by the front window for a week waiting on me. ๐Ÿ™

So anyway I think I’m going to be the only person on my flight from Canada to Jamaica who’s bawling! People will look at me like I’m on crack I’m sure. Who cries on their way TO Jamaica?

When I think about some of the differences in lifestyle one of the funny things that comes to mind is Kleenex. Right now I have them in every room of the house and in my bag because I’m always cold and my nose always runs. In Jamaica I’ll carry them in my bag because local bars don’t have any toilet paper! I will not run out of socks in my sock drawer every week, and I’m sure my feet will revolt when I return to Canada. I’m also worried I will become a homeless dog shelter because I can’t stand to see them all picking up a grain of rice off the street and call it dinner.

I’ve already learned to carry an empty cigarette pack along with my full one. I find when I’m smoking people who don’t even smoke ask for cigarettes LOL. I will just flash the empty pack and and ask them for one instead. I also already know I can eat for about $400 jmd per day since a box food will last me for two meals. I’m good! I know I can cook but I will be on the road most times writing and shooting video for YOU guys!

Again if you’ve been following me on Facebook you’ll know that I’m launching a whole new part to Jamaica My Way….a video segment. It’ll be just like this blog but in TV episodes. I’m SO excited to get it started! If you’ve noticed I’ve tapered off writing quite a bit it’s because I’ve just run out of things to write about. But that won’t be for long because ALL of April I’ll be on the road in high gear and gathering so much to share that I’ll be writing for months!

So be patient because the blog drought is about to end and will be brought back in writing AND in video. And if it turns out I can’t make a living in Jamaica I’ll be beggin yuh some credit! ๐Ÿ˜€

Stay tuned!

The video segment sounds like a great idea. Not everyone has the guts to do what you’re doing, so good luck.

  3. Wow you are really brave. i live in the Caribbean and it can be quite the culture shock once you step outside the manicured hotel lawns. Looking forward to seeing your take on it and hoping you are not without a job for long

    1. @Wizzy – I’ll be doing my own business stuff so I don’t have to look for a job. Otherwise this wouldn’t be an option. And I haven’t seen the manicured hotel lawns since 2003!!

@Stew, thanks for the support! Maybe we’ll link up finally!
