Driving Through Bluefields, Westmoreland

Our stop in Bluefields on the south coast of Jamaica was spontaneous. This was part of our 2-day, 9-parish trek with no agenda. Actually our only agenda this day was to tour the Appleton estate and rum factory but because of all these little gorgeous places to stop we never did make to Appleton!

The photo above is the reason we stopped – just to take pictures of that. But then we discovered actual people in this quiet and sleepy little place. Honestly we thought this strip of road was uninhabited because it was so quiet but sure enough we discovered some people. One of them was out trying to make his catch of the day. A lobster fisherman in the shallow water. I sat on the wall by the water and waited for him to come up to the beach and see what he caught.

This lobster was as fresh as they come – it was still alive! I’m telling you, if I ate seafood and I was anywhere near home I would have bought these off the guy for dinner. I always have such respect for the amount of work Jamaicans put into their daily tasks. The guy was out there catching lobster by hand when in the big commercial world they do it in mass quantities with fancy boats and gear. All this guy had were his hands and his spear and who knows if this was his only catch to sell that day and put dinner on his table.

Our stop in Bluefields lasted only about half an hour and it’s a part of the island I’ve never even touched before. It was enough for me to want to go back and stay for a while and cover more of the area. I did notice some absolutely beautiful big homes in this area. I’ve heard about the south coast and have been to the rich town of Whitehouse but never spent any time there. It’s definitely on my list.
