Buying Produce in Jamaica

In ten trips to Jamaica this was honestly the first time I ever saw a vendor weigh their produce before they sell it. I guess I haven’t been shopping at the right places.

I took this picture while parked on a roadside in St Ann’s Bay. This guy was just on the roadside with his scale, selling his yam.  The reason this picture is so entertaining for me is because of the scale.  I think it’s awesome!  I STILL say simplicity rules!  Makes our supermarkets looks waaaay too complicated!

I love shopping at the markets in Jamaica because of the simplicity.  People just buy what they need for the day like one onion, one tomato, a couple potatoes, one bag of rice, etc.  They don’t typically stockpile like we do back home!

Shopping is so much more convenient in Jamaica because someone is always selling something on the side of any road.  My favorite are the produce trucks that drive through neighborhoods and come to you!  In many communities this is a regular occurrence….every few days locals drive up with their trucks or vans loaded with fruits and veggies for sale.    There’s fresh produce everywhere!
