Chicken Foot Soup

Back by popular demand, this is a repost of a previous entry before I lost all my data.  But I had several comments on it and we all think its hilarious!

One afternoon while hanging at our apartment in Ochi my Jamaican friend started complaining of a stomach ache so he informed me he was going to run to the market and get some soup to settle it.  He returned with a steaming hot cup of what looked like some fabulous chicken soup.  Tasty looking chunks of veggies in it and smelled awesome!

It wasn’t until he drank half the cup that the truth came out….this was no chicken soup.  It was chicken FOOT soup and I could see the disgusting looking foot in it!

I’m not even sure how I held this cup to get the picture taken but immediately after the picture he took the foot out the cup…..thinking what?  That I wanted a better look at a nasty chicken foot that was in soup he was ingesting?

No he didn’t want to show me the foot.  He had something WAY more interesting in mind.  An episode of FEAR FACTOR because he plopped the thing in his mouth and started chewing it!  Well he and my other friend were laughing hysterically while I literally fled from the room gagging….yes I actually ran out the door and didn’t come back til that foot was good and swallowed.  By far the most nasty thing I’ve witnessed in Jamaica….ONLY because I have yet to witness a murder!

A Jamaican acquaintance of mine told me that I could never fully have my Jamaican citizenship until I’ve eaten a chicken foot.  I guess I’ll forever be a foreigner then!!  LOL.

Stay tuned for future posts on equally yucky Jamaican dishes such as cowfoot or goathead soup.  Hahaha.

dont forget the cowhead or cowcod!!!

    1. HAHA well if I see anyone cooking that crap in Sept I’m definitely taking a picture.

  3. well i was on my way to buy some lol………..I could sit and eat an entire bowl of it and still want more. Its good for the body and very nice indeed. I have it in soup, as a curry or even on a bbq…. I’d rather eat cow foot and chicken foot than fish eggs(CAVIAR). Why do you seem to make a joke out of our culture and its dish preferences… the whole idea you go on holiday is to have fun and learn different things about that country not mock what you learn. How juvenile….if you dont like it then thats ok…but refrain from making jamaican dishes a commodity.

    1. No one’s making fun of it. Its all about personal taste, and this wouldn’t be one of mine. I’m sure there are plenty western dishes that Jamaicans wouldn’t like or would think are strange. Who is mocking anything?

  4. LOL! Chicken foot soup is popular in other parts of the Caribbean as well.

    1. I figured it might be. Probably popular in all kinds of places….just that we don’t eat it here in Canada. I still haven’t been brave enough to try it LOL!

  5. Ok, this post has me SCREAMING out with laughter HAHAHAHA!!! We were at grand market in Morant bay this past Christmas, and my boyfriend said he wanted chicken soup. Our friend went for 3 cups (for him, myself, and my boyfriend), and with one gulp, he felt toes tickling his nose. We passed out laughing LOL! Blouse and skirt…mek mi call im and laugh afta im again lol.

    1. LMAO!!!! I dunno how you guys do it!! 😀 I literally ran from that room when I saw the foot!!! A REAL Jamaican ting dat!!

I’m on my way home right now to go cook mi chicken foot soup. as a matter of fact, my ‘canadian’ born kids request it like crazy. Love mi chicken foot soup. but I can see how it would look strange to another culture, but don’t knock it till yuh try it man.

    1. Actually it doesn’t look strange to me, it just totally doesn’t appeal to me. I just can’t do it LOL!!!

  8. watch bizarre food , then you wont look at chicken feet as weird

  9. I live in Atlanta and I can get chicken feet in many stores and Jamaicans aren’t the ones buying them

    1. Hey Tenor, I agree with you. Lots of cultures have their own versions of bizarre foods. Before this chicken foot soup I’d never seen people eat chicken foot. It was my first experience.
