The Truth about Roads in Jamaica
First of all this post is meant to be hilarious, and if you’ve ever been in a car in Jamaica you’ll laugh and relate. I’m not gonna lie to those of you who haven’t been to Jamaica yet…..the driving there is NOT for the faint hearted! You might wanna buckle up just to read this post LOL.
EVERYONE in Jamaica is training for Nascar!!! Pair that with the fact that some of the potholes on the roads resemble craters in the moon and you have a recipe for disaster! Every once in a while when I’m in a taxi fueled by nitrous I calmly put my hand on the driver’s shoulder and say “Excuse me but I have kids back home”. LOL!!
Speed limits and residential areas mean virtually nothing on Jamaican roads. And ONLY Jamaicans can turn two lanes into 3 lanes INSTANTLY when overtaking another car. See in Jamaica when passing someone, it doesn’t matter if there’s oncoming traffic. Its the unspoken rule of the roads for the oncoming car to make way for you! In essence a two-way skinny back road automatically turns into 3 lanes of traffice going whichever way they want LOL!
It seems almost every ride I’ve had in Jamaica that takes more than 30 minutes turns into a harrowing experience I’d NEVER tell my mother about! Speeds in excess of 150 kph is just cruising, hairpin turns at speeds so fast the tires screech and you wonder if the car will just give up and roll, 6 people in the seats and one in the trunk, I’m not kidding you! I do have to say though, that this is one of my favorite parts of being in Jamaica….its pure adventure. But I have wondered if my last will and testament is up to date as well.
This video is kinda fun….you can’t really get the feel of this road because we’re filming inside the car but I was attempting to transfer rum from one bottle to another without spilling. I do believe I managed to not spill ONE drop on this winding country road, complete with potholes!
I am, however, a firm believer that if a person can drive in Jamaica they can drive ANYWHERE. Jamaicans are skilled drivers and I put my life in their hands every day that I’m there. I give them all two thumbs up because my son still has a mother!!

You’re so right about the driving – those guys could drive anywhere! I know I wouldn’t have passed the rum pouring test – I’m poison when there is no movement – lol. My craziest drive in Jamaica was up in Nine mile on a bus going around the bend overlooking the valley with no guardrail – wowzers!
OMG I know!!! I’ve been on that road in a car in the rain and it’s NO JOKE!!
